McLaren call for Ferrari backup

It may have seemed an unlikely prospect mere years ago, but McLaren and Ferrari are ready to join forces to battle a formidable opponent.

One only has to turn the clock a few years back to witness the fierce rivalry between Ferrari and McLaren, whose dominance made almost every Formula One season nothing more than a two-horse race.

However, they both have been usurped recently by the relatively new kid on the block, not just in terms of an fast-rising F1 team, but also by a young racing hotshot.

Red Bull made their F1 debut in 2006, and it only took them four years to land their first constructor's championship. That same year, a young German by the name of Sebastian Vettel announced his arrival by charging his way to the drivers' championship to seal a double victory for his team.

Their dominance has continued this season, with Vettel winning five out of the seven races prior to this weekend's European Grand Prix.

And with McLaren lagging behind on the leaderboard, Jenson Button has called for help in battling Red Bull for F1 supremacy, and from none other than their old rivals Ferrari.

In particular, Button feels the time is ripe for Fernando Alonso to claim his first victory of the season, after the Spaniard clocked the fastest time in Friday's second practice session.

"We need more than just Lewis Hamilton and myself to fight Sebastian Vettel," Button told The Guardian.

"We need Ferrari in there too."

Button concedes a Ferrari win would harm McLaren's own prospects, but compared to more domination by Red Bull, it was the lesser of two evils.

"If they [Ferrari] are quicker than us they will take points off us, so it is tricky both ways.

"But I think I would rather take the risk and have them competitive, and hope we can do a better job than both of them.

"Seb is still the man to beat, but Fernando's car worked well in Canada [two weeks ago]."

Button also that Alonso could find no bigger motivation this weekend than to win a race in front of his home crowd.

"Fernando has had a couple of races where he feels he could have done better.

"And at one of his home grands prix, he will be motivated."

Alonso's best finish this season has been at the Monaco Grand Prix, where he finished second behind Vettel.

P.S.

Fernando Alonso says Ferrari are having a 'very bad year'

Realistically Ferrari and McLaren need to be regularly in front of Seb in order to take the championship. If just Ferrari or just McLaren end up faster, Seb can just finish 3rd-4th every race for the rest of the year and still be champion

The article is totally factually incorrect anyway. Look at this blunder for a start;

Red Bull made their F1 debut in 2006, and it only took them four years to land their first constructor's championship.

It isn't that far back to remember that they made their debut in 2005 after buying out Jaguar Racing.

Absolute media bollocks. McLaren and Ferrari are the bitterest of rivals with a huge history of battle behind them. The day they join forces, pigs will fly. :hehe:

Yeah, saying the it would be logically better for Ferrari to have won in Valencia rather than RBR, does NOT mean McLaren and Ferrari are "joining forces". Talk about media sensationalism...

This is nothing.

Its simply Jenson saying other drivers need to take poitns away from Vettel for him/Lewis to have a shot. In other words..... even with Jenson winning a few, if Vettel comes in P2... Vettel still wins.

But, it seems fun to write disproportionate crap.

It's not such a reach. Ferrari are already running MacLaren's white powder.

Yes its true...Jenson is saying Ferrari needs to get in the mix to help take points of Vettel. Hardly the need to include so many question marks in the title IMO.

You could keep it as a reference for the future.

Anyway, I'm hungover today...still recovering from the 2 hour 'coma' I experienced yesterday.

You couldn't be any more wrong.

If Mclaren get a massive boost and are faster than RB for the rest of the season, then Lewis would get the majority of the wins, I love Button, but Lewis is generally faster. If ferrari get in front then Alonso will get most of the wins, especially seeing as Massa can be ordered around. If both Mclaren and Ferrari get ahead of the RB's then Alonso and Lewis will be fighting it out (like the good old days) split the points and allow Vettel to sit back on his stockpile of points and watch them fight for 2nd place.

Im hoping Mclaren get ahead of RB and Ferrari get on par with them...i can but dream.
