Say if the new turbo engines were not passed, do you think there would be a development freeze for the 2.4 V8s? I hope if there is no development freeze place, that the engineers squeeze them for all they're worth to get more power and revs.

I'm just wondering how much further can you take those 2.4 V8s in terms of max power and max revs?

It's kinda irrelevant really given that the engines are 'locked' to their current specification, power and max revs which I believe are limited to 18,000rpm!

It's interesting that Jean Todt seemingly jumped the gun announcing the engine formula change... due democratic process ignored!!!

The FIA's stance is that these regulations were to affect the 2013 season and the current Concorde Agreement ends on 31 December, 2012.

Step aside Jean Todt and hand over control to FOTA! The FIA have backed down a number of times since Jean Todt took over presidency. I don't buy the excuse that the development time was too short; if the likes of Austin are expected to complete a whole Grand Prix circuit in the same time frame; these huge car makers should be able to churn out a L4 Turbo in the same time frame. The FIA has become a complete joke, stop creating rules and standards only to give in six to twelve months later to the teams...

i think these rules are total rubbish, i dont want formula one to anything do with road cars, its all toal crap,

and with the blown diffuser rules now coming in, im going to miss that rattly ping when they downshift at silverstone, that was awesome

It does seem odd that there are road cars that have more power than an F1 car... there's a few road cars out there now that produce 1,000bhp, but F1 has to be seen to be more road relevant and ecologically friendly which is ironic given the miles flown, Monaco -> Canada -> Spain...

I've said it before, but just give them a weekend fuel limit and let them figure out how to get to the end of a race with it...

Yes, but I meant give that as the only real rule and let them decide whether they want to use a V8, V6, turbo, NA etc. to allow more room for innovation.

I'd vote for that but the FIA seem to be keen on a spec series... having a spread of different engine configurations is one of the things that attracted me to F1 back in the day...

Everyone had already switched to using V10s by the point it was made mandatory, anyway.

I do miss the screaming V10s, they're so much nicer than the current whiny V8s.

Seems to me the teams and engine manufacturers would whine about this being too expensive to R&D properly. Just look how bent out of shape they got thinking they'd have to make a 4 banger turbo, which I think would involve many less variables to consider.

Maybe if they want F1 to be so eco-friendly maybe they should give a max horsepower limit and leave the rest of the specification empty, that way engine manufacturers will be forced to make the most economic engines as that will be the only advantage they will be able to gain over competitors.

It will also encourage them to make smaller and lighter engines and we could see different approaches such as turbos and normally aspirated engines with differing cylinder layouts.

I get the feeling that these open-ended proposals would just not go over very well with everyone constantly complaining about development costs.
