Fernando Alonso will remain at Ferrari until at least the end of 2016 after renewing his technical and racing deal, it was revealed on Thursday. Alonso joined the Italian team in 2010 after stints with Renault and McLaren, and over his 23 Grands Prix with Ferrari has taken five wins, 11 podiums, two pole positions and 293 world championship points.

“I am very happy to have reached this agreement,” said the 29 year-old. “I immediately felt comfortable within Ferrari and now it feels to me like a second family. I have the utmost faith in the men and women who work in Maranello and in those who lead them: it is therefore natural for me to decide to extend my relationship in the long term like this, with a team at which I will no doubt end my Formula One career one day.”

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo added: “It is a great pleasure to have renewed our agreement with a driver who has always demonstrated a winning mentality even in the most difficult circumstances. Fernando has all the required qualities, both technically and personally to play a leading role in the history of Ferrari and I hope he will be enriching it with further wins very soon.”

Spaniard Alonso, who won two world championships with Renault back in 2005 and 2006, will compete in his home Grand Prix this weekend at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya.

So, no more titles for him then, right? :hehe::twisted:

This is definitely good news for the mid-term... first of all, becaue it allows Ferrari to plan ahead and Alonso to give it his all into the development within the team. For example, to avoid what happened at BrawnGP after jeson won, got the team to design around him, then left.

Everyone knows Alonso is pretty knowledgeable... i think he could someday own or head an F1 or a racing team.

Other than that... just hope Ferrari can produce a good decent car and fight for championships in the next 2-3 seasons.

So is Fernando the only driver to be on the technical team within his team , Nice add on there! I guess they have to come up with a reason to pay him so much if his driving isnt enough

His driving is plenty, he just happens to also be technical. I'm impressed that his whining on the radio has reduced this year, as has Hamilton's and Vettel's. While we all know and realize that racing drivers at that level are a bunch of spoiled, whining, babies...its irritating to hear them crying over the radio as often as they used to. I wonder if the FIA didn't say something to the teams about image.

In any event, good for Alonso. The entire island of GB said his personality would melt down the Ferrari team and it appears to be exactly the opposite.

what is it with the generalisations today man?

I personally have never even heard of the absurd claim that all of my country follows.

So are plenty of other drivers, when they sign for the team they sign as a driver in press releases, I find it funny this perpetual myth that Fernando is some demigod who has a degree in engineering. 6 tenths he brings to a team because of this degree :hehe:

I think Ferrari is making a wise decision. As I've said before, I don't like him personally (I think he's got a rather cold, controversial personality--or so it seems), but by Zeus, the guys can freakin' drive the wheels off an F1 car. He is solid, solid, solid.

I think Fernando will definitely retire with Ferrari.

I think this is the least surprising news of the season so far; Alonso has been bigging up the team all season (and last) and LDM heaps high praise on the Spaniard, now we just wait and see who will be his #2 in 2013 if Ferrari haven't created a breakaway series as threatened on numerous occasions

If his Number Two is that good that they shouldnt be a number two, they will beat Fernando whether the team like it or not.

Massa is not good enough, not by too far though, for Alonso so hes a No.2

Barrichello was not good enough for Schumacher by some distance, No.2

Theres nothing Ferrari can do to stop the No.2 car from outqualifying a No.1, and out-racing. Unless they are running 1-2.

Ferrari are also not special-needs. They wont ruin their chance for a WDC by favouring a driver worse then their No.2.

Ferrari are also a team that are the most team orientated as oppose to driver in the whole of F1. If Kobayashi joined and started outperforming Alonso despite being a Number Two, theyd support him as much if not more then Alonso. Not least because Alonso in a Ferrari is still a sore subject to a lot of tifosi.

ffs... Alonso doesn't have a number 2 or are some of you just ignoring the multiple occasions this year where Massa has led/finished in front of him while in easily swappable positions but no swap was taken by the team?

My comment was meant to be a topical joke! But Ferrari tend of hire one 'superstar' driver and one not so good driver; which indicates a #1 and #2 driver structure!
