Olympics is worth the money to the government! huge massive sporting event tgat will bring in millions perhaps billions!

Poppycock. Look at the LA Olympics... a fiscal failure of awesome proportions - Nothing is guaranteed where poor management is concerned - and we brits are rubbish at management.

Tourism has gone up in Sydney by 20% since the Olympics, that's a lot of money considering 10% of our GDP is tourism...

It raises a city's profile, brings a lot of benefits that aren't measured in a fiscal sense and it allows the people of that city to be proud...

A bunch of cars going around a track that's traditionally been used as a marketing tool to push cigarrettes? That's another matter alltogether...

wow me and demure are on the same page haha

But you must look at the part the olympics plays in this day and age, the coverage of UK as a whole will be on TV screens across the world to billions of people its not just a sporting event. Compare that to a GP what do you see? just the track you dont have segments on local tourism spots or culture etc etc.
The Olympics is worth alot more to the economy thats for sure

I think Jackie Stewart makes the point in his book that it would be a great shame for Britain to lose its Grand Prix. Not only does it have historical significance, but so many teams are based in the UK and the event has inspired many to go into the industry, on and off the track.

I agree the Olympics are a bigger event and have a lasting effect on the host country. I'm not disputing that at all. However, a GP is very important as well for the economy and what not plus it is held year after year. Sooo, a few $m, a minute fraction of the Olympics budget would be enough to spiff up Silverstone and secure its future for a long time - that money gets easily repaid within a few years with the little LH mania you got going there.
It doesn't have to be either - or, it can be both.
