Nico Rosberg could be in-line to replace the out-of-favour Felipe Massa at Ferrari in 2012, it appears, with reports that 'contact' has been made between the legendary Scuderia and the young German's management team.

Despite a mini-resurgence in the last couple of races during which he has genuinely taken the fight to double world champion team-mate Fernando Alonso, the general consensus within the F1 paddock is that Massa's days in scarlet are strictly numbered, and that come season's end and the conclusion of his existing agreement with Ferrari, the Brazilian will be out of the Prancing Horse on his hoof, if you'll pardon the pun.

Both injured Lotus Renault GP star Robert Kubica and Red Bull Racing ace Mark Webber have already been linked with filling Massa's shoes at Maranello – but it seems the pair could face another threat from Rosberg, who has impressively controlled Michael Schumacher at Mercedes Grand Prix since the record-breaking F1 legend's top flight comeback at the beginning of last year, routinely out-qualifying, out-racing and out-scoring the most successful driver in the sport's six-decade history.

Now, claims Italian magazine Autosprint, Ferrari has been in 'contact' with Rosberg's management to enquire as to his contractual situation – with the 25-year-old understood to be on a three-year deal with Mercedes that expires at the end of next season.

EVERYONE is a candidate for Massa's seat. Including Massa.

Its interesting to see the actual talk... but its not surprising really. Rosberg is an interesting driver. He doesnt talk much and when you see him or hear him you wouldnt guess he'd beat much people on the track... but there he is, delivering solid stuff for several yrs now already.....

That seat should be Robert Kubica's, but sadly he is injured, so Rosberg will have to step up.

It's high time Rosberg got his hands on a decent racer. He deserves one now. :banghead:

But will that decent racer be a Ferrari? the Ferrari's of late have been a little hit or miss... but the question I ask; will Rosberg be happy to play second fiddle to Fernando Alonso or another driver; I like Nico Rosberg, but I can not see him being a leading driver or equal driver in a red race suit!

I couldn't agree more. He's a class driver who's never been in a powerful enough car to show his skills. He's been able to show how good he could be in the Mercedes, but plonk him in a Ferrari, McLaren or Red Bull and I'm pretty sure he'd be a serious contender for the Driver's World Championship.

He seems fine with Schumacher and Ross Brawn. I dont think he lets that affect him... he could have even made some good media drama when the team got his fuel strategy mixed up, but he's a sensible guy and kept his mouth shut.

And that's why I've always liked the guy, he lets his performance on the track do his talking. He never said a word wrong when being written off having to share a ride seat with Schumacher, he never made a stink about handing over the lower (odd number) to his team mate. He does the best he can with the car he's got under him, quietly. I'd rather him get the car he deserves as Mercedes instead of having to go look for that car elsewhere.

The only thing sure at Ferrari is that they'll do what they feel must be done to get a win, I do believe the tifosi mentality is correct that the driver is simply the vessel to deliver Ferrari wins in. Given a string of years without a championship win, even Alonso's seat will be question.

Yes; he is not as vocal as some; he does just get on with it; but how long will that last if he is told to move aside for his team mate when they are racing?
