I chuckled with this Google banner ad on the forum... I'm almost flattered. So I thought it would be funny to keep a running list of the local targeted ads that pop up for everyone.

I don't mind some of the ads, it's how the internet makes a living. The annoying ones are the ones that are intrusive and start playing a video or audio stream when you're doing something else like listening to music. I actually had used this before but hadn't installed it when I upgraded to Firefox 4. Thanks for the memory jog.

why even put up with them?

Because loads of websites wouldn't exist if everyone had adblock? It costs a lot of money to host & maintain a popular website therefore as long as the ads aren't too obtrusive and don't slow my browsing down, I'm happy to support the owners of my favourite websites by not blocking the ads.

It would be even better if you lot clicked on one of them once in a while :)

I do block ads in general because they do slow down the browser as many ad servers are not fast enough to serve the ads without slowing down the host website where they are being presented; Google probably doesn't have this issue given their huge wealth and resources but the old Foxy Bingo adverts slowed the page loading time by upto 10 seconds per page which is an eternity if you read a 100 pages per session. Its a fact that many people simply ignore online advertising these days as it's become such a big part of the web that they become almost invisible which is why many high profile sites have more and more intrusive advertising, if you simple move your mouse near one of the adverts a full screen video pops up, this is the main reason I use adblock!

that, and there are plenty of malicious "ads" even on legitimate websites. I'm simply not willing to trust all of them. If a site I frequent has a subscription model to remove ads, i gladly pay it.

you would be suprised how many people would leave a forum if you suddenly had to start paying for it.

I clicked on one of the ads and it takes you away from the forum instead of opening in a new window; highly annoying and most will close the window/tab and the forum will be gone! :yikes:

I wasn't suggesting that it should be a requirement. Just an alternative.

I don't think it's needed on Forumula1.com; there's one ad in the top right; opposite the Forumula1 logo!

I know, it is just that the forums that I have been a member of I have paid for once and then never bothered again as it does not make a big difference, they might give you access into more rooms/areas but they are never that exciting lol. As for would I pay to have the ads removed... probably not.

I clicked on an advert because it said i had a virus but i didn't and no my computer has lots of popups saying that i have viruses and that i must pay $50 to have them removed.

I payed the $50 but they are still there and i now must pay $100 to have them removed.

But i'm no mug so i'm not going to pay a second time.

I clicked on an ad that said I was the millionth visitor and that I had won a free iPad 2. So I was lucky. But that good luck must have run out because a few days later my bank account was emptied via my debit card and I can't stop my computer from playing a stream of a Mexican radio station in Tijuana. I'm still waiting for the iPad 2.
