Just a request Mods, if this stupid bickering between these two start pissing you off, kindly take them aside and give them a hiding, and would prefer if the thread stays unlocked. I'm enjoying the points put forward in comparing one of the fastest drivers of today with one of the greatest of all time. Thank you.

I've liked SV, from the start. He was a breath of fresh air. Let's see how he develops, matures and improves. We could be witnessing somebody and something special - let's be open-minded.

he's very good, and i dont see why "we" dont want to give these guys time; seems like most of the arguments come from such a hurry to call him great... compare him to Senna, to schumacher...... let the kid drive and be himself.

interestingly, same goes for Lewis!!

THIS.

OP is kinda vague i think.

Is Vettel as good as Aryton Senna _________:

A) in the rain?
B) in pole to flag wins?
C) when driving a mid-level car to flag?

Vettel is not quite there yet...it all depends on the type of competition he's up against in the next few years.

I believe that SV is a very special driver. Maybe not Senna-esque, but definitely right on par with Hamilton (who I also see as a supreme driver). Alonso is on that list too, but has a tendency to struggle when things don't fall his way and the red mist comes down.

Vettel seems to be able to string together a perfect lap in qualifying when the heat is on. That is why he wins the poles, not necessarily because his car is fastest. Also his starts in Australia and Malaysia were great. In Australia halfway through the first lap he was steaming away from the grid.

With all the discussion of "Vettel is only good in the best car on the grid" they talk about the Torro Rosso win as a counterpoint. But a better counterpoint is that he was second in the 2009 WDC. This was where the RedBull was the equal of the McLaren and the Brawn after Brawn's steaming start.

For 2010 and 2011 the RedBull seems to be mighty. But that doesn't take away from how well he is driving it.

Do you guys want to know how good SV really is??
Then ask yourself if you had to chose between Vettel or Newey, who would you pick?

And there is your answer

That's a completely invalid comparison asking to choose between a driver and a designer. Beside I'm sure given the choice right now every team would take AN over ANY driver

Agree

Now lets give it a twist! Lewis Hamilton or Paddy Lowe?

Vettel as good as Senna. It's a touchy point clearly. But it's too early to say. Vettel is only 23 afterall. Senna was 28 when won his first championship. Obviously the average age of drivers in much lower nowadays, but the point is, wait till Vettel wins 3 world championships before we judge.

A lot of people will argue that Vettel is made to look good because of the car he's given. Which to a certain extent, is true, but thats formula 1 and it's how the sport works. You have to make the most of what your given. Lets not very quickly forget how dominant the car that Senna drove was in his championship winning McLaren days either.

Now I don't personally know Ascanelli, but I trust someone's opinion who has worked with both men, over the views of spectators. It's hard to argue that really in a few years to come Vettel could be just as good as Senna was. However, personally I think there are more drivers of that caliber today than there was 20 years ago, simply because the scope for finding talent in the lower categories is much greater.

People seem to have trouble differentiating between "making the most of what your given" and "Vettel is as good as Senna"

To ask questions with no factual answer in any walk of life or subject, stats only mean so much, you have to take everything that can be stripped of information in determining the question in hand.

As such, i dont KNOW, not dont THINK or WANT, i dont KNOW, if Vettel is as good as Senna, because the criteria on which i (and most others should if they want a well rounded take on it) base the question on, hasnt really come to fruition, it should do, but isnt definite, by the time Vettels career is near an end, same with any other driver.

The car Vettels in is, and when hes won always has been, dominant. You can like that or lump that especially Vettel fans on here (vlad, nish  ), Vettel hasnt won unless his car is the best on the day. Is this his fault, no, of course not, and he still has to drive it to the flag, which he does remarkably and better then anyone in F1 if you ask me. BUT THIS IS IRRELEVANT, because it isnt whats being adressed here, its whether Vettel is as good as Senna isnt it?

What is comparable is that Senna also won 2 championships in a car that was quite clearly the class of the field, in 88, and 91, the other year it was class of the field Prost beat him, and the year after that it was oer the course of the year, equal with Prosts Ferrari. So he has won when the car isnt dominant. I want to see Vettel do well (obviously not win, especially if Hamiltons the other WDC contender!) when hes in a car that has to fight for wins, or he at least has to fight for his pole before he f**** off and leaves the others in his dust!

I would not say Vettel is as good as Senna from what i have seen of him so far.

He is a great driver, i think he is definitely one of the top 3 on the grid but i dont compare Senna to anyone on the grid today.

Valid point by Frafpdd. And i dont mind you grouping me in with Vlad (though i dont think i am as much of a radical as him  )
