Maybe it isn't the most physical game in the world, doesn't mean it isn't any less challenging, you are effectively running light sprints up and down a court for an hour. Aside from the physical strain, there is more to an athlete or at least what I would have to consider the GREATEST athlete.

Lotsa credible names already mentioned - Jordan, Rossi, Schumacher, Armstrong, Ali. Isn't there also some guy who's dominated Pool (or 8-ball) since the beginning of time? Its open to interpretation as discussed, but my nomination would be MJ also. He was seriously in a class of his own and a real linchpin in the team(s) he was in.

Joking aside even though I'm still not convinced thats a women ,deffo no to a date thanks
Ice hockey players have just about as much skill as anyone I would of thought.You need to be gracefull enough to skate,tough enough for a fight or two and still be able to have hand eye coordination to whack the puck with the stick
Although my knowledge of ice hockey stops at Wayne Gretski,the only player i've heard of ,so not saying hes even the best player in that sport

I got a bit curious after reading through this thread and looked up a few lists of 'The Greatest Athletes Ever' and Michael Jordan comes up an awful lot. I think maybe those of us who live in countries where Basketball isn't a particularly a big sport find that more surprising than those that live somewhere like the USA. I can't say I know a lot about the man other than the fact that he's the only basketball player I could actually name, so I guess he was rather special.

since when is basketball only watched in 1 country?? have you heard about the dream team for the olympics? lots of countries not only watch basketball, but also play it competitively.

just because the nba is an american league doesnt mean the sport itslef is solely american. its the same case with the bundesliga, premiere league, mls, italian league, and so on.... the NBA is simply a league, it is not "the sport of basketball".

just because the nba is an american league doesnt mean the sport itslef is solely american. its the same case with the bundesliga, premiere league, mls, italian league, and so on.... the NBA is simply a league, it is not "the sport of basketball".

This always happens, someone (not their fault at all) takes something too literally and it spirals off.


Nobody is literally saying basketball is only played in one country. But its majority audience can be attributed to one nation of about 250 odd. That alone qualifies it as a very one-country sport.

It also whether meant or not comes across so arrogant when its our US cousins that say MJ is the greatest athlete, when only one nation really has a chance at producing the greatest ever basketball player. Football (soccer) is Europes, South Americas, and Africas sport. Dominated. Boxing is played to a proffesional level by almost every semi-developed country in the entire world, and there are current world champions from about 18 countries let alone competitors!

Of course its not MJ's fault its a US sport, but i still dont think he qualifies for the best athlete ever.
