I'm critisizing your blatant disregard for f1 in this debate! I've already said who I think is worthy of this title Michael Jordan!

you didnt say why you picked michael jordan?

Do I really need to? He was and still is in a different level to any other ball player and will remain that way, Ali was good in his time but would not win against modern fighters .

I'm perhaps slightly biased here as i used to sprint at school, but holy crap, Usain Bolt is probably the greatest natural athlete on the planet right now. It is quite staggering to see someone turn up and smash records quite literally at a canter. That said Michael Johnson is the best all time track sprinter in my eyes. I find it harder to compare different eras in other sports though...

I get your point and agree that the seemingly effortless performance is staggering, given the chunk of time he took off of a WR. You being biased to sprinters is understandable, we're all going to have our bias. However his performance is limited to two events. Have him run the 400 and then 800 and the hurdles and throw in the long jump and you've got an equivalent Michael Phelps performance.

I don't think it's really a fair and equivalent comparison though, ie comparing long jump to performing a different stroke. Track and field disciplines require fundamentally different physical attributes for success... i'd argue in swimming the only difference in strokes is technique and if you're built correctly then it's far more widely applicable. Not that i'm bagging on Phelps because i do know how good that guy is.

One name i feel compelled to add to this thread is Miguel Indurain... Cycling may be a point of contention but he wasn't a doping victim. Resting heart rate of 28bpm. Lungs like bin bags. Incredible athletic specimen.

Yes you do need to, cause you totally ripped off my well-versed point, and didnt provide, and still havent provided any substance to your view? Thats not how you go about debating things?

Don Bradman, anyone? :)

Seriously, I can't single out any one person, to be honest, because of the variations in sports, in eras and in the levels of competition. There are a lot of athletes who would go up in that top tier, though.

Maybe if you read myvery first post you would understand! Again your dismissal of any F1 driver got me going!

Shouldnt get you "going", you might do well to learn to argue a point which angers you (although it really shouldnt) by providing some logical analysis of why its so stupid. To which you havent? Im all ears for your to provide a critical hit on something that in your implication should be so easy to rip to shreds, but you cant seem to do it, at least, your avoiding it rather obviously.

It's incredible that this has managed to cause anger. You state your opinion and move along, if you've got something to say pro or con about someone's post, we can do that, and keep it civil. Does everything on this site have to raise someone's ire? If you're having a bad day, maybe learn to release those frustrations doing something constructive or more a traditional stress release... like punching a wall.

If you feel the way you feel about this thread bud, why continue to post or respond? You stated it in your first post, nothing else needed to be said.... then again, if you felt its an illogical thread why even respond in the first place? You responding to something you feel is utterly illogical is not logical in itself.

as i said fraf saying F1 drivers are ineligible got me going. I hate it when people say motorsport isnt a sport or doesnt require blood sweat and tears dedication hard work to get to the top just like any other sport. Its bullpoo if people think that, especially on a F1 forum of all places. I usually hear that from people who know nothing about motorsports and think the drivers are sitting on their bottom and dont even sweat!

And we have seen WB you and Scotty disagree with the word "unfair" popping up. Yes its unfair to compare apples with oranges each individual was great in their own sport. Comparing a swimmer with a sprinter and then saying who is better just doesn't work.

What does my first post say? This topic is illogical! Ffs it's not hard to understand ! :banghead:

You have a problem keeping cool when theres clearly nothing to get upset about, if someone disagrees with you on a topic you take it as a personal vendetta. My opinion is not that Jews are money-hoarding scumbags, or **** should be made legal, for petes sake, its that i dont think an F1 driver should come close to being the greatest athlete ever, its something that i am not alone in believing and WB has already agreed, to an extent at least.

You really wont advance this circle of pointless arguments on here until you sit back and realise what your needlessly causing trouble for, ive kept calm, my conscious is clear in that ive done nothing wrong here, your getting angry for no reason. Since i had my little pep-talk thread ive kept out of trouble, and im not willing to get into anymore since that, so can you please act more civil whether you disagree or not, I dont think Michael Jordan is anywhere near being classed the greatest. But youll find i bothered to ask you why, rather then tell you your being stupid.

" it is better to debate a question without settling it, then to settle a question without debating it"

Fraf its humorous hearing advice from you just not long after you made a thread telling everyone youre sorry for being argumentative! madre mia

If your going to try and make me feel bad, and or patronise me for being honest, and wanting a new leaf with people including you who i enjoy the company of, then your fighting a losing battle. Im not talking about past events, or my history on here. We live in the present, and we are talking about this topic, of which i am not in the wrong. Im not looking for you to apologise, im not trying to gie you advice, im telling you how it is.

Now if youre going to continue the current trend of just insulting me and or my views everytime i try and converse quite civilised with you then im not going to bother from this point onwards. As im not into getting this thread locked and or derailed because you cant act with reason and civilty.

Ok, let's cut the bickering out. I created a topic that I thought would be interesting to discuss and find out about other passions of our members lives outside of F1. I don't thing we would have found out about Scotty's sprinting career otherwise. It's just for discussion, a break between GPs, I didn't intend this to become yet another argument riddled thread.
