Hamilton inspired by racing legend

Lewis Hamilton will take inspiration from the late Jim Clark as he bids to reinvigorate his season in China this weekend.

Clark is rightly remembered as a Formula One legend, a double world champion with a phenomenal record of 25 wins and 33 pole positions in just 72 grands prix.

Clark is also recognised as a one-marque man as all of his 72 races were with Lotus prior to his death at the age of just 32 in an F2 race at Hockenheim in 1968.

Hamilton, who has so far spent all of his career with McLaren since his debut in 2007, has now competed in 73 grands prix with the team that has nurtured him since the age of 13.

Now 26, there is plenty of time yet for Hamilton to one day fly the nest, but for now he has surpassed Clark's record for most races for one team only in an F1 career.

"I've been told by someone on the team that of all the drivers in Formula One to have only driven for one team, I'm now the driver who's raced in the most grands prix," said Hamilton.

"I'm told Jim Clark drove 72 races for Lotus, and Malaysia was my 73rd with McLaren. It makes me feel very humble.

"I never saw Jim Clark race, but I know he'll always be remembered as one of the greats, and as a loyal Lotus driver.

"Loyalty's extremely important, and I'm proud to be mentioned in the same breath as him.

"It only gives me even more determination to bounce back stronger than ever."

Hamilton's desire to do so stems from a poor performance in Sepang on Sunday when he endured a woeful race, blaming strategy, tyres and poor pit stops for his lowly finish.

After being given a retrospective drive-through penalty for weaving in attempting to block Ferrari's Fernando Alonso, Hamilton had 20 seconds added to his time, dropping him from seventh to eighth.

With his criticisms now behind him, Hamilton is eager to focus on this weekend's race in Shanghai which cannot come quick enough in order to get Malaysia out of his system.

I thought it was DC or Mika would've driven for much longer? DC was with McLaren from 1997 till end of 2004 if not mistaken?

But the point is DC moved on to Red Bull. It's not a 'mclaren' record - its a record for the most number of races for a driver who has only driven for one team. In Lewis' case that team just happens to be mclaren.

Yeah, but they each raced for more than one team in their F1 career. If Lewis decides to move on to another team after McLaren, he will become ineligible for this record, and it will go back to Jim Clark.

I know. DC left F1 from Redbull only in 2007 wasn't it? He was with McLaren till 2004 as per my original post.

I guess it's due to less races per season as Frafpod suggests, but I still find it hard to believe that Lewis bagged this record. He's only been in F1 for just over 4 years! I would even think Schumacher is ahead with his partnership with Ferrari!

But all those drivers did not stay with the same team for their whole F1 career, so they are not eligible.

Clark was with Lotus and only Lotus. Lewis is with McLaren and has only been with McLaren. If Lewis decides to move to Ferrari, Red Bull, etc, he will lose this "record" just like all of the drivers you have mentioned.

In other words, the record is not "most races with first F1 team".

Right. Well...there's not been many drivers who've only just driven for one team during their F1 career is there?

Its not much of a record then. :D

Err, dear Mods..you could delete/lock/padlock this thread....its outrun its course already.

Well, if Lewis always stays at McLaren then that'll be one heck of a record to beat.

And a rare one at that...

I heard somewhere McLaren were considering offering him a £300m lifetime contract. That would be a hard one to turn down I reckon.

But the strength of teams in F1 can change so quickly. I'm not sure if F1 drivers would make such a commitment with even such a storied team as McLaren. The evidence is in the rarity of drivers sticking with one team. Heck, the record holder probably only has it because he was killed early in his career.

Regardless of their performance, McLaren will always be a highly reputable team. Lewis has already been linked to them for the majority of his life and that partnership will probably continue. The reason most drivers don't stay in one team is that they usually have to prove their worth in a less competitive team and make their way up the ranks. Plus, it's a sure fire £300m in the bank, if anything I think the team is less likely to make the offer than Lewis is to accept it.

You are mistaken - it was 1996 - 2004 (was almost 1995 too as he did sign the contract with McLaren to race with them in 1995, but Williams invoked a clause in their contract to keep him there for that season - so he could only move to McLaren the next year). He then raced with Red Bull from 2005-2008. :)

That's a sensational, preposterous assertion. Such an action would be wildly negligent to the shareholders.
