Yes, you heared it right. They are changing the way the different compounds/threads are being held apart....AGAIN.

1) This is a good thing because, even after one race it's clear that the current system doesn't work very well.

2) Why haven't they got it right 10 years ago.

I mean really, how hard can it be? Get some paint and bloody use it, not a stripe not a dot but paint the hole sidewall maybe even the rim, why the *!@#$ not.

If a goverment puts up a stop-sign, its's not going to be a black sign with a 2mm grey stripe on the outer edge. It's going to be bright red and white, with a large surface area for both. We figered out that combination works for centuries, so why try to re-invent the wheel.
But no, it took 3 years of "development" to work out, that only one groove should be painted white or green. And now there aren't any grooves anymore they panic.

And the brainiacs came op with this:
Image
EPIC FAIL as far as I'm concerned, they had test days, it's easy to spot and easy to change.

While in the US, 10 years earlier:

And as we know the two dry weather tires have to be either very soft and medium or soft and hard. I propose:
Very-soft: Red
Soft: Orange
Medium: Yellow
Hard: White
Intermediate: Green
Wet: Blue
And paint the rims if the need arises aswell

Put the Pirelli and the rim manufacturer logo's in Black or any other highly contrasting color.

EDIT: merged topic as it's been discussed in this thread. WB

We do, and it's another half-arsed half-brained change once more.

They are going to add a stripe again, but to ensure that it doesn't solve the problem, they are going to make it a very thin one.
Also they will keep bringing silver and yellow to the same GP, so even if you do manage to see the stripe on the first lap(afterward it will either be worn off(very close/on the track-surface), or covered in rubber/dust) you definately will not be able to tell if it was either yellow or silver. :banghead:

I hope the commentators will be commenting on all the pitstops, because honestly that will be the only moment at which they/we can be surtain.

the permanent solution he was talking about seems good. I wonder if this is what they were testing in Turkey.

And i think we will still have no clue what tyres there drivers are on this weekend. The thin stripe ain't that helpful by looking at that pic. And the colours that Pirelli have chosen for the dry slicks are to close together.

Probably already mentioned but what a lot of crap comes off these tyres, I'm all for what Pirelli have tried to do but what it looks to me like is they've wrapped a layer of sticky crumbly rubber over a slippery hard tyre, how is anyone meant to make a move offline with all that rubber lying around on the track?

Di Resta and Vettel said they were hit by tyre marbles... Like a bullet in that speed!

Agreed, it ensures even less overtaking anywhere apart from the designated overtaking section. Also, tyres should wear out, not 'drop off a cliff' it isn't safe and it isn't clever and adds a random factor unnecessarily into the mix.

ESPNF1.com "STRAY MARBLES HURT" - DI RESTA

With tyre wear a focal point, Paul di Resta has said that he was hurt by flying marbles during the Malaysian Grand Prix.

Over the race weekend a large amount of little chunks of rubber built up off the racing line in Sepang. Discarded from the heavily wearing Pirelli tyres, concerns had been raised that it would hamper overtaking as drivers would have to drive over them and lose grip. Di Resta, however, said that they also caused him pain as they flicked off the tyres.

"Come the end of the race, it gets difficult to overtake," di Resta told the Daily Telegraph. "The other big thing is that they kept coming up and hitting me in the hands. In the middle of a fast corner, these lumps of rubber would be smacking into my hands as I turned the wheel. Rubber is not the softest material and if it got you in the right place, it could hurt."

Pirelli's motorsport director Paul Hembrey said it was the first he had heard about the complaint, and that if other drivers had the same problem it would be a difficult one to solve.

"I have not had those comments from the top three [finishers] but if it's an issue, we will have to confront it," he said. "There was a lot of overtaking though. We will have to analyse all the overtaking manoeuvres but the marbles have to go somewhere and that is a difficulty for us."

Malaysia winner Sebastian Vettel backed up di Resta's claims, and said it could lead to some interesting souvenirs for fans at street circuits.

"There was a lump (of tyre) that was suddenly in the middle of my visor," he told Auto Motor und Sport. "They're like bullets fired from the car in front. Imagine Singapore or Monaco, where a fan could suddenly find a piece of tyre in his tea."

This does seem to be and issues with all the excess rubber around the track. Is it time to consider that Pirelli has screwed up with there fast degrading tyres?? Although thats what Pirelli was told to do.

I have no problem with the idea of fast degrading tyres but Pirelli has to find a way that the marbles aren't so bad but the way they want the tyres to wear i don't think its possible. They need tyres that is between last year Bridgestones long lasting tyres and the current fast degrading Pirelli tyres perhaps. Your thoughts??

The problem with the tires isn't that they're degrading quickly, the problem is the way they degrade. Typically those marbles instead of being strewn about the side of the racing line would have rubbered in the racing line itself. So what we're getting instead of the distinct black racing line forming during the weekend we're accustomed to seeing, is a clean line forming in the middle of black marbles. So the penalty is two fold... not only do you not get the increased grip from the rubbering effect, you not get a treacherous off line section to the track.

Go into an art supply store and look around at the different types of erasers they've got. It's bewildering the things you can do with rubber. So I'm sure they could do whatever they with with the characteristics of the tires, but it's likely that it's too late to do anything about it this year.

I wonder if this is, at least in part, due to using a synthetic material rather than natural rubber to make the tyres. What did Bridgestone use?

Tires have been made mostly from synthetic rubber for a loooong time.
