Jenson got screwed by Ferrari dirty play.
Massa holds him up till Alonso catches up
JB sees that gets overly aggressive passes illegaly
Massa (being Alonsos LAP DOG) lets him by
Massa pits

Jenson is in no man land and has to take the hit.
My respect for Massa just :thumbdown::thumbdown:

Yeah, that's the most logical explaination :hehe: you must HATE Ferrari. Massa was just plain slow today you know...!

It was not against the rules, and it was a very clever move, especially to think that fast on your feet! Alonso got by/ was let by Massa almost instantaneously after Jenson got by. I thought it was pretty sweet thinking....

Imo this isn't even a debate, Jenson SHOULD HAVE given the place back. In today's F1 they don't have a any way to punsih him any other way, is there?

Well, yes, actually they do. As defined by the 2011 Regulations, they can issue:

a) A drive-through penalty. The driver must enter the pit lane and re-join the race without stopping.
b) A ten second stop and go time penalty. The driver must enter the pit lane, stop at his pit for at least ten seconds
and then re-join the race.
c) A time penalty. (added to the drivers race time at the end of the race)
d) A drop of any number of grid positions at the driver’s next Event.
e) A reprimand.
f) Exclusion from the results.
g) Suspension from the driver’s next Event.

Given the circumstances, Option C makes a lot more sense.

isn't the time penalty like 20 seconds? which would add up the drive through practically

I would say Lewis is the quicker but he can be very hard on his tyres and brakes he only seems to know one way to drive ,where Jenson is much smoother and more considered in his approach, both ways can be successful just look at senna and prost one kind to the car the other choking the life out of it.

Jenson broke the rules and got punished; whether Ferrari switched places and pitted is neither here nor there; If button slowed immediately to let Massa back past he could have defended against Alonso and still been in with a shot of a podium finish. I think McLaren/Jenson needed to be proactive and relinquished the position; asking the FIA is a bad choice, the FIA take too long to make a decision and as happened; Ferrari pitted which ended up in a drive through for Jenson. Lewis was the better driver on the day; there is no doubt about that but I think that Jenson had some genuine pace; he just made the choice and it cost him, end of story really!

Was a bad decision from Jenson, really didn't expect that from him - Ok maybe a hot headed Alonso fighting lower positions and almost out of the championship back in Sliverstone but with the hindsight of that experience it seemed clear cut. Aren't you supposed to give the place back within three corners? I even recall the actual penalty being "track limits", he clearly cut the circuit and that was why he overtook Massa at that point. Massa not leaving him room is the same as Kubica did to Alonso in Sliverstone, and that wasn't considered a problem.

But it looks like Jenson still needs to improve in qualifying. I don't think he can rely on making up positions in the race, but who knows how it would've gone had he not been held up by Massa at the start.

Jenson broke the rules and got punished;

Yes he did; I wrote about that on my blog...

I could post a link but that'll be breaking the rules I am charged with enforcing, so I'll post the relevant part below:

Button found himself down the field after serving a drive-through penalty for cutting the chicane and gained an advantage over Massa; the Briton should have simply relinquished the place straight away and defended his position against Alonso. Referring it to the team and McLaren referring it to FIA delegate Charlie Whiting was a mistake as the FIA are notoriously slow at making decisions; and before a decision came back, Ferrari had pitted both drivers which meant the only option was a drive-through. Jenson screwed himself; if he simply relinquished the position Jenson might have still finished on the podium. Although Vettel did something similar later passing Jenson by leaving the confines of the track and the FIA did nothing; they’ll say that Vettel had made the pass but I counter-argue that if there was a wall there, Vettel would not have been able to make that pass as he would have been in the wall; the run off area allowed for Vettel to carry more speed than he normally would have if he remained within the confines of the track. Again it’s another case of FIA stewards being inconsistent, what happened to strict enforcement of rules?

Five, ten or twenty-five as far as I'm aware.

Anyone here have Star Sports as their broadcaster?

We have this genius called Steve Slater, who called Jensons 'overtaking move' = BRILLIANT...and didn't even notice that he left the freaking road to overtake Massa. The co commentator was quiet during this time and a minute later, interjected "I believe Jenson might have cut the corner there"....and Slater still didn't buy it. Until the box came up "Car number 4 under investigation".

What a JOKE of a commentator. I wish we had Brundle. You BBC guys are fortunate.

Yep, I get to watch the endless ads at the wrong time courtesy of StarSports. That was pretty bad miss by Slater, although he's not normally that bad.

I can't agree, he is that bad consistently. In the same race when Jenson (I think) lapped a Sauber, his response was "And there is Jenson passing Nick Heidfeld without much trouble". WTF??
