I thought that was a nice start to the season. I was expecting a Vettel win and it went to form, I'm just hoping that the rest of the tracks offer some oppertunities for the other teams because that Red Bull is far too fast.

McLaren have more race pace than I expected, as do Ferrari actually, compared to testing and even qualifying. Hamilton was managing to hold on to Vettel quite nicely in the early stages, even coming within 1.5 seconds before the first pit stop. Button was fairly idiotic for not giving that place back to Massa, it was obvious that he was going to get penalised.

I was hoping for Di Resta to finish in the top 10 but I think he did a pretty great job for a debut but not nearly as good as Perez, that was a grat drive!

And well done to Petrov, I've not really been a big fan in the past but he deserved a podium today. It's just a shame Kubica isn't getting a chance in that car.




P.S My apologies for just disappearing in the chatroom, my nephew decided he wanted to watch batman on the computer and that was the only way I could keep the F1 on the tv.

I don't understand..how do you replace the bits when the car is in a race? The issue which I see here is Lewis driving an underweight car as a result of ballast being lost. A car has to be racing as per minimum weight, and I fear the broken floor might have caused the car to cross the minimum weight line.

To pass scrutineering you're allowed to put back what fell off after the race! Ballast isn't the issue here, DC and MB never mentioned that, they only talked about wear on the plank.

And Tex what you mean it's a no no? The rules there to stop teams running too low to the ground, Lewis' car didn't break this rule it had the right ride height a part failed which was a disadvantage not an advantage to Lewis!

Me too. It was a great debut for Perez. What a shame to be disqualified for something the drivers really don'tt have that much control over.

Kamui Kobayashi, Sauber, Melbourne 2011Sauber drivers Sergio Perez and Kamui Kobayashi have been disqualified from the Australian Grand Prix over a technical infringement.

Perez, making his grand prix debut, had finished in a strong seventh position, one place ahead of his Japanese team-mate Kobayashi.

After the race, however, the race stewards excluded both cars over the infringement of technical rules 3.10.1 and 3.10.2.

The infringement occurred in the uppermost rear wing element.

Article 3.10.1 reads: "Any bodywork more than 150mm behind the rear wheel centre line which is between 150mm and 730mm above the reference plane, and between 75mm and 355mm from the car centre line, must lie in an area when viewed from the side of the car that is situated between 150mm and 350mm behind the rear wheel centre line and between 300mm and 400mm above the reference plane. When viewed from the side of the car no longitudinal cross section may have more than one section in this area.

"Furthermore, no part of this section in contact with the external air stream may have a local concave radius of curvature smaller than 100mm.

"Once this section is defined, 'gurney' type trim tabs may be fitted to the trailing edge. When measured in any longitudinal cross section no dimension of any such trim tab may exceed 20mm."

3.10.2 states: "Other than the bodywork defined in Article 3.10.9, any bodywork behind a point lying 50mm forward of the rear wheel centre line which is more than 730mm above the reference plane, and less than 355mm from the car centre line, must lie in an area when viewed from the side of the car that is situated between the rear wheel centre line and a point 350mm behind it."

The exclusion of the Sauber drivers means Ferrari's Felipe Massa is elevated to seventh, ahead of Toro Rosso's Sebastien Buemi, and Force India duo Adrian Sutil and Paul di Resta.

That's all gobbledygook to me but I'm sure some of you understand it perfectly and can dumb it down for me.

If Alonso didn't botch the start he would of finished higher. Not first but higher than 4th. Oh well it is still a very, very, very looooooooong championship.

I feel sorry for the drivers and the team... they wouldn't deliberate,y build an illegal car.... think they have justified the speed of their car. Adrian Newey was taking a long, hard look at it on the grid.....

I've been catching up on the thread befor coming to the Sauber newss... what a bummer for the dynamic dou. Perez was my rookie choice and DQ or not, he just earned himself big props. I don't think this Sauber result was a fluke, so the grid has been place on notice, Sauber is shooting for not less than 4th in the constructor's competition.

I actually managed to get my old bones to watch the race at 2am my time, it was boring at the front actually, the entire excitement of the race (which the exception of Hamilton's splitter) was run mid field.

BOY was there action, and given't last year's "Bore"ain premeir, I'm actually glad we got the start in Australia.

Good job to Vettel... it really was a drive in the park for him.

What's the deal with the Red Bull KERS, it wasn't used at all during the race... not even at the start?!?!

Good job all around, I've no clue what Jenson was thinking, but not letting Massa right back cost him at least a stop if not two.

I'm glad that in race trim the Ferraris are competetive, much differently behaved car than in Qualy trim. Alonso didn't send a Chrismas card to Petrov last year, and I think he may not be getting one this year either.

Overall, good first race, now I'm off to check my fantasy results.

I wish the media would clam up about what Kubica might have achieved in the Renault. Petrov drove bloody well and shouldn't be discredited.
