Missed your post of the video, it is very impressive.

I guess everyone is pretty quiet on the subject because no-one really knows for sure. Hurry up weekend!!!

don't rush... just learn to savor the anticipation!!!

I passed the end of my anticipation tether about a week ago :hehe:

I know the feeling... I'm just using you as a scapegoat to try and rationalize it on my end. :hehe:

So back on topic, what would happen on Saturday? McLaren show up with the box, and if it's allowed to race, so be it, if it's not then they have their conventional exhaust? In the end, all of this can be avoided if they made the box out of the same material as the exhaust and or don't actually "connect" the exhaust to that box instead just blow into it. It's all splitting hairs of the definitions and seeing what you can get away with.

All I read was that the car would surprise... but nothing as concrete as a number. How many hours do we have to wait now?

Yes he has said in the teams Australian preview that the testing times are not representative of their true pace. Not that the wording said any exact numbers.

2011 AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX PREVIEW

Lewis Hamilton
"It's felt like a very long winter. I started the new season feeling fitter and more positive than ever and I've maintained that enthusiasm and momentum despite a somewhat difficult few weeks of winter tests.

"We can't hide the fact that testing has been tougher than we expected: our test mileage hasn't been as high as that of our rivals, nor have we had the outright pace of the fastest cars. Still, I have a good feeling with MP4-26: I like driving our car, I think it will look after its tyres quite well and I understand that we'll be making further performance steps ahead of this opening race.

"Nevertheless, we know we go to Melbourne ready for battle: some teams are extremely well prepared - both from a pace and reliability point of view - but that can sometimes count for little in the unpredictable and somewhat chaoti opening races where it's equally vital just to take points home.

"I strongly believe that, while our preparations haven't gone as smoothly as we'd have liked, I get the impression that we'll be arriving in Melbourne with everything finally meshing together - and that makes me really excited."

Jenson Button
"In the past, I'd always travelled to Melbourne full of positive energy and enthusiasm. But, at the moment, my heart is with the people of Japan as they struggle to come to terms with the scope of the terrible devastation and loss of life wreaked by last week's earthquake and tsunami.

"While the prospect of a Formula 1 race seems to pale in the face of such a disaster, there have been occasions before when the healing power of sport can actually be beneficial; an escape for people. So I go to Melbourne this weekend resolving to not only try my best, but also to salute the brave people, and my many friends, throughout Japan.
"Albert Park has been good to me: I've won there for the past two seasons; it's a great circuit for racing, it always seems to create unpredictable races and, perhaps because it's habitually at the start of the season when a precise pecking order has yet to be established, we often see fast cars running out of sequence - and the excitement that that brings. With the added issue of multiple tyre stops, it could be a very exciting and unpredictable race weekend.

"I'm regularly being asked if I can make it three wins in a row this year. On paper that might not look likely, but, seriously, who knows? I most definitely wouldn't rule it out."

Martin Whitmarsh
Team principal, Vodafone McLaren Mercedes
"Over the winter, we set ourselves some extremely ambitious performance targets for MP4-26. Vodafone McLaren Mercedes are an uncompromising team and, as with every car we build, we tend to push development to the limit.

"In some cases we've pushed over those limits, and the resulting lack of mileage has invariably eaten into our pre-season preparation.

"However, it's called testing for a reason - and testing MP4-26 beyond its limit has, in some ways, been highly instructive. In actual fact, we've gathered a huge amount of useful data about the car, its handling characteristics and its management of the tyres. So while we've further fine-tuned the package for Melbourne, we've once again set ourselves some extremely tough targets for this opening race weekend.

"So, do I think our testing pace is representative of the pace we'll show in Australia? No. Do I think we head into the weekend as race favourites? Unfortunately, no. But do I feel that we have the capacity to surprise a few people and be competitive? Very much so.

"As with everything we do at Vodafone McLaren Mercedes, we never give up: we're fighters - that's the spirit that has won us 20 world championships in the past an which makes us a team you can never under-estimate."

The exhaust exit is at the lighter and more shiny shade of grey toward the rear of the floor, for anyone who might not already know. No starter hole exits for them... AFAIK nobody is directly using the starter hole for an EDB effect this season because steps were taken to outlaw them. Perhaps someone has more detail on that they can share. The purpose of the Ferrari and RBR current configuration is to try and get as close as possible to the effect of a blown diffuser from last season, i think.

I'd agree with Scotty on this. Ferrari and Red Bull seem to have come up with similar exhaust solutions. They are simpler than the McLaren O-Box and the Renault FEE. Renault seem to be getting a handle on their FEE, although it remains to be seen how reliable it really is. Way back when Renault FEE first hit the scene I posted a comment on how difficult I thought their task was.

Exhaust length increases problems - exponentially. And it becomes very hard to model. You are mixing acoustic/vibrations/resonance with extreme heat and explosives. Even without that, you simply have the huge heat dissipation and shielding issue.

If the O-Box is, in fact what McLaren have come up with then they have the problems I've described above, plus they have a "second" chamber now attached to their exhaust system (forget about whether it's legal), I'm wondering if its at all possible to actually make it work? If they do it will be absolutely impressive. This second chamber must present huge problems because of the effect of the resonance within the exhaust. In the current crop of engines, resonance works pretty much like a turbo, by forcing unburned gasses back into the chamber for extra combustion. The MP4-26 now has this 2nd inviting chamber in their exhaust system, along with the twists turns and additional length.

Every engine has to be tuned to its exhaust, at best this is a nightmare for McLaren at worst, sorry to say this, but I think it might just be too much. I think a lot of the problems Macca's have had could well be related to this. Engine changes... heat problems.....

The O-Box may well be something like cold fusion - impossible to achieve (so far) but there is a never ending steam of very smart people who think they can make it work :)

So back on topic, what would happen on Saturday?

McLaren are really in a tough place. What they need is more testing time, and, my guess would be testing time to see if they really think they can make the O-box work. I'd guess there's even a fair chance that they might opt out of it and choose to run with some reliability. Go back to a more conventional exhaust might be my bet. It also avoids the "legality" minefield.

I think McLaren will deem this GP a success if they're able to get both cars to finish and be in the top 8. Anything more than that, they'll be thanking their lucky stars.

Here's an actual quote from a different source (BBC):

Team principal Martin Whitmarsh hopes McLaren will be one second faster in Sunday's first race of 2011 than in the final pre-season test in Barcelona.

McLaren's car had been off the pace of front-runners Red Bull and Ferrari but dramatic alterations have been made.

"The changes are intended to deliver more than a second in performance," Whitmarsh said ahead of the season's opener in Australia.

"We hope the risks we have taken come off and we are competitive."

The new parts include a completely new floor and exhaust system, both of which are key in creating critical aerodynamic downforce.

Whitmarsh admitted the team had been forced to return to a simpler exhaust design.

"The exhaust systems have become quite a lot more extreme on quite a lot of the cars. I think we, in particular, had very extreme solutions, but I think they were not delivering, in my opinion, sufficient benefits for their complexity," he continued.

However, Whitmarsh maintained the new MP4-26 was not fundamentally slow.

"I think the car isn't a bad car, I think we need to unlock the exhaust-blowing potential," he explained.

F1 teams are currently using "blown" exhausts, which channel exhaust gases to improve downforce.

"We had some very creative ideas, some of which could have worked spectacularly well, but in order to work spectacularly well they had to be sufficiently durable to be raceable - and frankly some of our solutions weren't," Whitmarsh said.

"So we had to go a little back, but in doing so we found some interesting performance. I think it will still be a challenging weekend, but that we will put on more than a second from the final test."

Whitmarsh admitted the extra two weeks of preparation afforded the team by the postponement of the Bahrain Grand Prix had been hugely useful.

"I wasn't satisfied with our reliability or pace in the tests this year. We've taken a risk to quite significantly change the car going into Australia, and if it [the car] is reliable and quick, then the extra two weeks will have been very crucial indeed," he said.

Crap article though, blown exhausts? They're the ones doing the blowing mate. :hehe:

Ya I was a bit confused by that too.

Less complex = I think they have given up on the O-Box
New floor and exhaust = I think we will see a very Ferrari/Red Bull looking exhaust. Will they have to change the side pods and rear wing now also?

Well, it may well be a good thing, and, often the simplest explanation ends out being the right one. Martin W is a clever guy, and perhaps he's decided that they gave it a shot, if the idea worked they would have been ahead of the pack. It didn't, so they will go the more conventional route. Which probably means they will in fact be a second or so faster. That would put them on pace with the leaders and then they'd be in the hunt.
