Are they saying that everyone can pick one type of tire that isn't among the normal types used right now? Does that mean brand as well? What's the purpose? What is the benefits. Also what is P1 and P2?


And with the safety car rules, what if a car has been damaged be cause of an accident but they haven't been taken out of the race, do they really want someone driving around even at safety car speeds with a broken wing? What if more breaks off then we have debris on more of the track, I don't think people should be just limited to changing tires during a safety car period. Does this also mean, no more forcing drivers to take a drive through penalty should it land at the last possible chance to take it and there happens to be a safety car? (Alonzo went through this last year when he was said to overtake kubica or petrov by clipping a chicane.)

What they say is that Pirelli may bring a third spec of tyres, besides the Prime and Option tyres designated for the race, but they can only be used in P1 and P2 (Friday practice sessions). They may also give teams an extra Prime set of tyres, to be used only in Fridays too.

About the safety car, I guess it just means when a driver gets a drive through penalty, they can't take it while the safety car's out (they'll have to wait for green flags). It wouldn't make sense to keep damaged cars from repairing.

I am sorry for this stupid question, but what is a Prime and a Option tyre?

In every race there are two available compounds to the teams. The prime tyre is the hardest, most durable compound, which is normally used in most of the race. The option tyre is the softest compound, which is faster to begin with but degrades more quickly, so the teams normally use it to set the fastest possible time in qualifying. It's mandatory to use both compounds during the race, unless there's wet weather on the mix.
