The Spanish government defended Tuesday its decision to cut the speed limit on highways to 110 km/h after Formula One champion Fernando Alonso warned that it will be "difficult to stay awake" at this speed.

The government said Friday it was lowering the speed limit on highways from 120 km/h as of March 7 as part of measures to reduce the country's fuel bill in response to the rise in world oil prices due to unrest in the Middle East.

"I don't support this measure. To reduce fuel consumption there are other measures that are much more effective than this one. At 110 km/h, it is even difficult to stay awake," Alonso told reporters on Monday when asked what he thought of the new measure.

"Alonso is faster than the speed limit. Do you understand that message?"

I guess the next thing we hear about Alonso is "F1 star loses license for speeding at three times the limit is his Ferrari F50!"

Is there such a difference between 110 and 120? So 120 you'd be awake but 110 its time to sleep?

I wouldn't know, my average is 140-150. :D

KM/H is about half of what MPH is so no need to feel all Speed Racer.

EDIT: I was wrong regarding the conversion, sorry.

Im no Speed Racer...its the normal speed on the fast lane in Msian highways.

Believe it or not, I was just reading a news article by the Road & Transport Department, there's outstanding speeding fines amounting to RM17 million (about 5 million USD) yet to be settled by all Malaysians. :hehe:

I keep my racing on the go-kart tracks!

How often can one actually go the speed limit, especially around towns with all the congestion?
The most infuriating signs are: "Minimum speed 40mph" while everybody is crawling at a whooping 5mph average :banghead::ranting:

Is that why you keep knocking your head so hard on the floor?

1mph is 0.62km/h, so it's more like 3/5th the speed ;) but of course that exponential; 60mph is 96km/h, so there is big difference.

Alonso wouldn't like it here in the US then as half the time the speed limits on highways is 60 - 65mph...

Move to North Dakota... no speed limits on 3/4 of the state roads! LOL

1mph is 1.61km/h but yes, 60mph=96km/h though linear not exponential, that would be really wierd.
