http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fermi_paradox

A graphical representation of the Arecibo message — Humanity's first attempt to use radio waves to actively communicate its existence to alien civilizationsThe Fermi paradox is the apparent contradiction between high estimates of the probability of the existence of extraterrestrial civilizations and the lack of evidence for, or contact with, such civilizations.

The age of the universe and its vast number of stars suggest that if the Earth is typical, extraterrestrial life should be common

I'm not so sure I agree with that thinking, the universe is only 3 times older than the earth and as far as I know, earlier formed stars don't have the abundance of the heavier elements that would be required for life.

You do not have too agree with it but only accept that what you have read or watched is mere speculation, kinda like accepting others opinions regarding other topics. Let's keep the dream alive in that we are not alone and could learn.

The part of the universe which we can "see" alone has 3 to 100 × 1022 stars (30 sextillion to a septillion stars) it's is widely accepted that there is a greater amount of area of our universe which we can't even observe because the distance is greater than the amount of time light would have traveled to us.

30 sextillion to a septillion stars... given that we're finding more and more stars to have planets. Even a conservative estimate would give you a pretty damned high probability that there are other systems like our solar system out there.... a lot of them

I'm not saying I don't believe there's life elsewhere, I think there probably is but I also think it would be wrong to just use the number of stars in the sky and the age of the universe as a measure.

Intelligent life capable of making and using tools is another matter, it's taken several billions of years of evolution to reach where we are today but who knows, perhaps we have been slow starters or perhaps that was quick or maybe just average. Maybe all surviving life evolves in such a way or maybe it's rare to evolve past worms which are happy crawling around in sand.

However, I don't believe we have been visited by anyone from another planet.

Just by looking at a drop of water under the microscope you see how much there is around....... the question is, is it relevant to us?

let's say there's life in another planet....... would you care if it were ants?
What if they were much more intelligent than us.... would they care about us or just wipe us out like we wipe bugs off our windshield??

Such life would have to be equally dumb as us for it to matter; in the meantime............ the US owes China and Japan a lot of money, Greece went bankrupt and the italian president hooked up big time..... oh and my country doesnt have oil! :irked: i think we have bigger issues.

WTF does this have too do with the topic??

I'm an Alien and I have a number to prove it; issued by the United States government "I'm an alien, I'm a legal alien, I'm an Englishman in... erm Kansas" doesn't work quite as well does it?

One of his better songs :)

We shouldn't expect little green martians or something like that. Life and intelligent life at that on other planets may well look COMPLETELY different - it doesn't even have to be carbon-based. The rate of evolution on other planets could also be vastly different from ours - there's really no reason to assume similar circumstances and thus, similar developments and time scales.

However, unless those intelligent entities have developed some sort of quantum leap/time travel/wormhole, etc., that could bridge the huge distances between planets with intelligent lifeforms, then there's no chance that somebody (UFOs) visited the Earth. Why would they in the first place? If you have the technology to travel faster than light, our rather modest technological level is very boring to you and it would feel like traveling backwards in time, like stone age or similar and you'd be laughing your arses off at our stupidity (destroying our planet, killing each other in wars, etc.) or you'd be totally depressed at what you see here.

people study chimps and their use of tools no? people study cultures deemed primitive to their own.

And we cannot fathom something doesnt mean its impossible. Perhaps bending space and time is a piece of cake for some other beings making travelling over vast distances like travelling from London to Sydney.

There's this concept which works the other way around. I believe it's a book or something, where humans are the aliens and discover space flight in order to spread (like a disease) to distant planets taking over from other life forms.

The alien subject is so popular because of the fear factor (us losing to others), though the greed factor is a concept not analysed enough IMO. There is an equal possibility of humans travelling and taking over other planets once we've depleted this one of its resources. It is quite scary, in a different way.

Oh my...here we go? This is about Aliens...

Anyway in regards to previous posts I believe that they use the "sourcer" shape to travel through space, com'on guys aero dynamics...
