I saw a promo for X Factor coming to America but it's all very nebulous and it simply focuses on Simon Cowell. So what the hell is it, and how is it different than the various flavors of Idol? Other than being told that it's wildly popular in the UK, there's really not much more said.

X-Factor is Pop Idol re-badged; plain and simple, there really is nothing new other than for the judges can say "you certainly have the X-FACTOR"...

 are you giving me your honest opinion?

Don't get me wrong, wasn't planning on watching it I'm just an observer of cultural differences. So I'm curious about the whole entertainment divide that exist between Europe and the US. After all the whole Eurovision phenomena is something that is quite foreign for lack of a better word, and seems to be very popular there. Pile on top of that some of the cross over shows and the whole thing becomes a fascinating social topic of interest.

I dont want to tarnish your openness but im going to anyway. Dont watch it. It is the devils work.

Eurovision is only popular to the over 50 in Britain and to everyone in eastern europe, its politics anyway, nobody votes for the UK as they all hate us, russians vote for the satellite states, satellite states vote for russia, portugal vote for spain, spain for portugal and so on.

As for the entertainment divide, your an old boy arent yo? Surely you know that American/European ENTERTAINMENT culture is the same thing. You like our James Bond films and we love South Park! Really not much difference at all. Although generally entertainment in Europe has a realism quality that seems to lack in US entertainment.

Well, what a bunch of old grumps you lot are. You sound like my grandad :D

The X Factor is brilliant stuff! I love all those fluffy shows though, it's what TV is for, mindless distraction.

Okay, there are a few differences between Idol and X Factor. The latter is a much glitzier production, when I watch American Idol now it all looks a tad drab. X Factor also has four different categories: Girls, boys, groups and over 28's. Each category has their own judge, so the judges are also competing for the win. Each judge is assigned their category after the audition phase, after which they whisk the possible contestants to some tropical locale. They then have some kind of high-profile person in the business join them for one last audition to whittle the numbers down to four acts per judge.

Then, once the actual show kicks off, the judges mentor the acts, helping to choose songs, etc.

It's the number one show over here. It airs from the fall until just before Christmas and it's all anyone talks about during that time. The Christmas number one song (a big deal over here) is usually from the winning contestant.

Can't wait to see how it does in the good ole USA :)

What are the chances! In any case, I don't know what the prize is but they're touting it as the winner getting 5 million dollars.

I don't get it, the public willingly pay massive amounts of money for nobodys to enter a competition which is only run to make Cowell even richer.

Because it takes a particular type of mind, Ecclestone and Cowell probably have a lot in common.
