All this talk about F1 drivers taking it easy in the off-season is just beside the point and ridiculous. We can't wrap them in cotton wool, or sit them at home in their easy chair with a glass of iced tea, I can just imagine the conversation: Here you go adrenaline driven F1 driver! Your only excitement for the next three months is knitting booties for the babies in Africa. What if Kubica went ski-ing? Took his bike out off-road? Went hand-gliding? Dived into a pool? Jumped on a trampoline? Played ball with his nephew in the backyard and his nephew threw the ball too hard and it hit his head at just the wrong angle? Went rallying? Climbed a cliff?

The point I and others are trying to make is he was motor racing which is inherently a greater risk than anything you listed and the other point is 4 WEEKS before the start of the season!?!?!? I see what your saying but you certainly must see the point we are trying to make also?

I hope we see some new changes/rules setforth for drivers now.

Todays update:

The Lotus Renault GP team has issued another update on the progress of its star pilot Robert Kubica. The Polish driver, for those who haven't been following, crashed during the Ronde di Andorra in Italy on Sunday – just weeks before the start of the F1 season – and was airlifted to a local hospital where doctors treated him for multiple fractures and severed tendons in his right limbs.

With the bulk of the procedures now behind him, Kubica is conscious (some reports state that he was revived from a medically-induced coma), and conversing with his doctors as well as visiting relatives and colleagues. Later this week, Kubica will have to undergo additional surgery (for his right shoulder and foot), to be followed by another procedure a few days later. He's expected to stay at the Santa Corona Hospital where he has been since the crash for another two or three weeks, after which he'll likely be transfered to another location to rehabilitate, likely for between five months and a full year.

With his recovery underway but a long road ahead, Renault will need to find someone to temporarily take his place for the impending season. Although the team has both Bruno Senna and Romain Grosjean – both recent F1 drivers – on contract, the team is reportedly examining all of its options. Among them are Force India drivers Tonio Liuzzi and Nico Hulkeberg, both of which raced last season and have proven themselves competitive drivers. Liuzzi lost his seat this year at Force India, while Hulkenberg took a test-driver role with the team when he lost his seat at Williams.

tex, i can see the point that your making about doing this sort of activity not long before the season starts, but if renault agreed to it which they did, well its just bad luck isnt it?, i mean with webber's bike accident, the person with him fell off right infront of him, so thats unlucky is it not?

My whole point is that RK should have had his priorities in order and I understand what it means too be a sporting man, I'm sure he is kicking his own bottom about now. Just my take.

Sometimes the team is put in a tight spot. Kubica specifically wanted this applied in his contract and if Renault said no, there's a big chance of a disgruntled employee, a guy who they are counting very much on. (look at his teammate for Gods sake).

McLaren barred Kimi from Rallies, if they didn't we'd have Lewis and Kimi now in McLaren (what a shame) but my point is its not really the teams fault in this instance. It is definitely mostly Kubica's to bear but again if I was Kubica and I wanted to do something I love in my spare time, I wouldn't regret my decision now. S**t happens, everyone knows it...I'd just be hoping to be back 100% fit as soon as humanly possible.

Raikkonen free to return to Formula One

Renault Kimi Raikkonen can pull out of the 2011 World Rally Championship to return to Formula One if he wants to, according to Citroen's rally chief Olivier Quesnel.

His comments come amid reports Raikkonen is now contractually committed to rallying for this season, ruling him out of a possible F1 comeback with Renault as a replacement for the sidelined Robert Kubica.

After making his full-time world rally debut with Citroen last year, Raikkonen has announced he will drive a Citroen DS3 under the Ice 1 entry in 2011.

"If he wants to leave, I couldn't say anything because he is a client," Quesnel told RMC Sport. "He has rented a car from us and drives with his own sponsors. I suppose there may be considerable pressure from Bernie Ecclestone, the FIA and the whole world of F1 who want to see him come back because he is still an emblematic driver for the sport."

However, Quesnel indicated that he doesn't think Raikkonen is too keen to go back to F1. "If he is taking phone calls, they would have to be very convincing to get him back there."

Nothing to get excited about of course, but I must admit I'm already excited. Foolish me. :D

Senna, Heidfeld and Liuzzi on Renault short-list

Renault have named three drivers who are under consideration to replace Robert Kubica, and the absence of Kimi Raikkonen appears to end intense speculation he might be tempted back to Formula One.

Raikkonen has not made any comment, but Renault boss Eric Boullier told reporters outside the Santa Corona Hospital that "the names considered are [Bruno] Senna, [Tonio] Liuzzi and [Nick] Heidfeld".

"The team is close to Robert, we wait for him with open arms," Boullier said. "It was Robert's choice, he wanted to go rallying at all costs and Renault authorised it. Now we just wait to know what the recovery time is for our driver."

Senna is already signed to Renault as a reserve driver, while Heidfeld is out of contract after being released by Sauber at the end of last season. Liuzzi had a contract to drive for Force India in 2011 but was nevertheless replaced by Paul di Resta and so has to be considered a free agent.

With the second of four testing sessions starting in Jerez on Thursday, Boullier needs to make an appointment in the next few days if Kubica's replacement is to get fully adjusted to the car in time for the season opener in Bahrain on March 13.

Boullier's comments also appear to rule out Nico Hulkenberg, who was controversially released by Williams at the end of last year. Although he is contracted to Force India as a test driver, it had been rumoured he may have been able to exercise an escape clause if Renault approached him.

There's only 1 in those 3 names who is worthy of even touching Kubica's seat....the other two are going to make Renault the JOKE of the season.
