ESPNF1:
Jenson Button has said despite the relaxing of rules on team orders, he believes teams will think twice before forcing a driver to play second fiddle.

"I don't think it will happen, I really don't," he told Reuters at the McLaren press launch in Berlin. "I think they will realise that two drivers are better than one. For setting a car up you need two experienced drivers.

"If you are putting all your eggs in one basket, the other driver's not going to feel like giving you feedback, is he? He's not going to feel like pushing the car to the limit. He's not going to qualify well and he's not going to race well.

"If I had a team I would have both drivers having a fair shot at it because they are going to push each other hard.

"I hope that drivers are allowed to race fairly. You do all this hard work of getting to Formula One and fighting your way through the lower ranks and you arrive and you should be given fair treatment."

He added the affect on the driver forced to concede could be negative. In 2010 Felipe Massa was made to concede a race to Fernando Alonso and his form over the remainder of the season fell away markedly.

"You could say [team orders] are great because all the points go to one driver but the morale within the team must be terrible because one driver always knows he is on the back foot. It can't be positive for a team to be in that environment, to have one driver know that he's got to give a place up."

Button went on to say that even if he or Hamilton was closing in on the world title with the other out of contention, he hoped McLaren would not favour either of them.

"I am happy with the position that we have in the McLaren team with no team orders, it's the way it should be when you are both world champions. You both want to fight for a world championship again, you don't want to give each other an inch on the circuit."

JB is talking an awful lot about this topic - remember his statements last year?
Anyway, sure, him and LH are both world champions and so it's relatively easy to justify a no-team order policy. So was RB last year with SV nor MW being a world champion - hm, I wonder how this will play this year?
But in Ferrari's case, there was a slight difference of 2 titles vs. none (and FM having lost his chance in the last corner of the last race, sorry FM). So, it made sense for Ferrari to go with the proven winner who was leading in the points already. This won't change this year unless FM for some odd reason enjoys a runaway season...

Well said Jenson :clap::clap:
I'd go one further and say it doesnt matter how many world championships you've got, if the other man is quicker then its his race.

What a shame Ferrari don't understand that.

Does anyone believe Massa would have had a shot at the title had he won that race? Alonso had made some pretty big mistakes that season, and Massa hadn't had a single retirement, yet was still clearly behind Alonso in the WDC standings.

Up to your old tricks again I see :nono: .

This is a Button thread.

What tricks? They blatantly rigged a race. It's a fact. They were found guilty of it twice.

I'm explaining what Ferrari understood.

Fine lets go through all the stuff Button's missed, I'm pretty sure he's game playing anyway. Just doesn't want to end up second to Lewis, wasn't so high and mighty when Ruben's started going on about this stuff last year.

Yes, but thats quite irrelevant if one driver (as in the case of Massa) is effectively out of the championship. F1 teams aren't happiness centres, they want to win championships, its why Mclaren got rid of nice smiley Hekki.

So he wants HRT to have the same equipment as McLaren?

If he believes that equal treatment should be applied to any f1 driver, why has he brought up them both being world champions? What happens if the two drivers aren't both world champions?

What the hell are you blethering on about? Massa was still mathematically able to win the Championship and for all Ferrari knew he was about to perform a massive comeback and dominate the next part of the season. As it was, they told him he was worthless and effectively sidelined him. If one doesn't think that damaged his performance from then till the end of the season, then one is quite frankly kidding oneself.

Yeah, it was more or less what I said, I was asking not in general like you made, but what happens in the opinion of Jenson Button

They maximise their odds, and that sometimes means making a sacrifice and looking at the bigger picture, Massa wasn't really a good enough bet, nor was backing two drivers, Alonso as it turned out, was.

Jenson also missed the obvious point of increasing efficiency when your focusing all your resources on one driver.
