Big WTF moment there. So WTF!!

Hope he recovers... but now? this season? baaaaaaad timing. I'm sure he will recover (from a general health pt of view), but with the ammount of drivers struggling to find seats (let a lone good ones), depending on how good he recovers he could have doomed his f1 career. :banghead:

From the video i understood "statto amputato un brazo".... not good if that's the case.

I know, I heard the same thing.. it translates clearly into Spanish and it wasn't good hearing them say it. It seems like it was just Italian sensationalist media, or so I'm really hoping.

I just read from a source who has a reliable source that Robert is almost confirmed out for entire 2011. :(

The main issue is he needs multiple surgeries on his left hand. The problem is not all surgeries can be done at once, and it requires a procedure where they mend each small bone 1 by 1, and this will take a period of many many months.

As great as it would be to see him back in a car this year, with the level of rehabilitation he'll need, I think that is almost a given. My hopes for him are to be able to come back to the sport 100% in 2012.

I hate too play devils advocate but why on earth was he racing anything especially rally so close to the F1 season it does not make sense to me. I really enjoy watching him race and I'm a fan but this could have been avoided.
As Gaz mentioned about McLarens policy I think that should be mandated by the FIA or every team because F1 is the drivers bread and butter not just their part-time job.

Well you can bet Renault are not just feeling sadness and empathy over this news. Robert wasn't doing any promotional stunts for them, this can be considered serious irresponsibility on his part. Though right now they must be in the process of determining the seriousness of his injuries first.

It's beyond the scope of the FIA, they should just focus on safety within f1 racing (and other FIA events). What an f1 driver does out of f1 should be down to him and his team/ manager etc.

Thats why I also mentioned the teams having a decision, I just tossed out two choices.

It's a bit like that whole Mark Webber argument everyone had here... why don't the teams just tell their drivers they have to stay in a protective bubble between races, no chance of getting hurt in there!

When the drivers are being paid multi-million dollar contracts they should refrain imho from other motorsports while under said contract. Have you ever signed a 'no competition' contract I have.

Yeah it was the first thing I thought of when I read the thread's title. I'm surprised there wasn't a ban on such activities outside of F1 duties in his contract with Renault. I thought that kind of thing was fairly common. I remember Damon Hill was not allowed on his bike while he was with Williams.

But Robert Kubica obviously hadn't and that's really all that matters! I'm not having an argument about it when it looks like Kubica's career might have been finished today, and he was WDC material.

Our own EwanM just posted on FB - "Morelli: "Robert Kubica is likely to miss the full functionality of the hand and right arm".."
