The fact that quite a few drivers have mentioned the additional complexities on top of the required focus to drive a car at 300 kph... I'm inclined to give current grid driver opinions a bit more credence than yours. I hope Jenson Button isn't the next one to go running his mouth as to how it's more complex driving the car this year...

JB, this isn't a safety issue. It's just a bit stupid how the driver is having to multitask with two additional 'technological innovations' which would help bring a better lap time, but it's not actually part of the spirit of driving/racing. I'm afraid next they'd have to solve puzzles in the car to start the race and they abandon the starting lights. :thumbdown:

The only tough part would be qualifying, during the race they only need to use the wing when they are 1second behind another car. Alternatively they could just not overtake :wink:

No offense Rubens, but it's too extra Buttons. Man the f**k up, there's bigger problems with these ideas.

im not really sure that any of us can say man the f**k up if we were trying to do something on the wheel, lose control and slam into a barrier with broken bones etc...i think we'd all be in a mild pain rather saying man up

Anybody else notice how few F1 drivers have been killed in racing crashes since Jackie Stewart became F1's self-anointed grumpy old man?

And no, it's not simply "too" extra buttons. Neither device is perpetually available and both have an indicator inside the cockpit that the driver must monitor to determine when they are. You can only heap so many tasks on the driver that require he come 'inside' the cockpit before you surpass the point of overload and begin impacting safety.

At 80 meters per second, I should think the driver would have better things to do than to wait for the whistle of the kettle.

I have more dislike for the wing thing... because its artificial and cartoon-like. The guys up there are playing too much Mario kart.
Being able to pass because the car behind can hit a magic button to get an unequal advantage means much less than being able to pass because he was better on the brakes, the line, his tires etc.

The same goes for having to pay attention to whether a certain wing option is flashing...... much less racing than paying attention how to out brake or steal the turn's sweet spot to the guy in front.

And I'd roll my eyes at him whinging about it too. You don't even have to press the button twice. KERS is only active if the button is depressed (And they seemed to manage it just fine in 2009) and the Rear Wing is closed again either by a second press of the button OR by hitting the brake. It's not like they're physically taking their hands off the wheel - as many of them were last year to activate the Active-RW80s several teams fitted - they're hitting a BUTTON with their THUMBS. They have been doing it several times a lap for years.

Making out that the biggest problem with these stupid ideas is the fact the driver - shock horror - might have to actually use them only serves to distract from the fact that they are completely stupid diversions cooked up to distract people from the preposterous anti-innovation streak which has taken root in F1's rule-makers.
