There is 3 types of beasts in F1.......Ferocious Ones.....Schumi,Alonso,Hamilton......Tamed Ones......Kubica,Massa,Barichello,Trulli........and the ones you keep on a leash(too nice of guys for their own good) Kova,Button,Heidfeld,Rosberg!!

The above, is no assessment of their driving skills at all, just an observation on their personalities!!! What seperates the Great from the Good is their Killer Instinct......some have it,and some dont!

I could be all wrong

Complete nonsense. This is a really superficial way of looking at it. This isn't an observation on their personalities, this is an observation on the media representation of their personalities, or the personality those you're talking about portray themselves as having to the public. I'm a lecturer, I portray a completely different personality in front of my students than I do in front of my colleagues, and different again to how I act when with my friends. These guys will be no different. Nobody should be so arrogant as to decide that they can work out somebody's entire personality from the tiny snippets we see of them every fortnight for minutes at a time in an interview.

Button is not somebody that's kept on a leash - just look at his various early career moves when he made the decisions (for better or worse) as he thought he could further his own career. Absolute nonsense to say he's a driver kept on a leash. Likewise with Rosberg. A year before he left Williams he basically said that if Williams didn't improve to give him a potentially race winning car in the near future he would be leaving - and look what happened...

You simply can't have been following F1 log enough if you think that Heidfeld is a driver to be kept on a leash, or indeed people saying that 'he had his chance and look where he is now - without a seat'. It is correct to say that Heidfeld has had chances to prove himself (albeit in an upper mid-grid team), and prove himself he did! He outpointed Kubica over 3 1/2 seasons together in spite of consistently qualifying lower on the grid. So the question has to be asked - why is Kubica in the position he is compared to the position Heidfeld is in? The simple answer is that Heidfeld has had an unusually raw deal at a time that all of the top seats in F1 are filled, it's nothing whatsoever to do with his 'lack of ability'.

As a further note - F1's addiction to youth is driving me potty. Why is it that nowadays once a driver hits 30 they're automatically 'past it'. What a load of bull. Until about a decade ago it was common place through the history of all motorsport - F1 included for drivers to still be competitive well into their late 30's and in some cases into their mid-40's. It's not healthy this idea we have in recent years that all drivers must be 19-29 to be at the top. Complete claptrap.

Wouldnt you keep the ferocious ones on a leash? You know, so that they dont go bite someone's head off?

The irony is that F1 cars are easier to drive now than they were when it was commonplace for the majority of drivers to be aged 30+

On the thread topic; Heidfeld had a good run in F1; he was a solid second driver but never a team leader, I feel he is being left behind with all the young guns around!

well there is the point of having new talent around, but what makes it really sad there is people like narkiyan ( or whatever his name is), with less talent than my A%^!, and decent driver cant find a drive

!

Nowdays all you need is fast drivers get the pole get the win get the title! And usually the youngins are the fast ones!

At which point in his career was his 'chance' exactly?

Agreed. The best car he had was the 07/08 BMW's, but they were only the 3rd best cars and still a relatively fair way of McLaren and Ferrari at the time

Yup. He never got a shot in a car that could win races.

He gave the lead to Kubica in Canada, he should have fought. He could have won as he took 2nd comfortably.

That's probably got a lot to do with why some people don't care. He fundamentally lacked the drive to win

You followed F1 long enough to know there's more then more then "lacked the drive to win"

And you've presumably been alive long enough to realise that someone saying something does not equate with agreement with it. I was playing devil's advocate.

This is way out of line. Were you watching F1 when he drove for Jordan?

I don't understand the hostility towards Narain, yet people hype up Chandok just because he's a great commentator. Narain performed a lot better during his Jordan times than Chandok did with Hispania. The Jordan was as much of a dog as the Hispania was, and he was easily outperforming Glock that year in qualifying and races! Glock is not some average driver, while Bruno Sennas best accomplishment in racing is being born as his uncle's nephew.

The criticism levelled at Narain is due to running out of steam at the end of the season when Glock started getting the upper hand. That was put down to his lack of fitness, which he addressed in his interview after signing with HRT.

Give him a chance before comparing him with your arse.

Erm... FYI, Glock was never Narain's teammate. He drove for Jordan in 2005, his teammate was Tiago Monteiro, who beated him in a regular basis. Narain did nothing noteworthy that season. So yes, his arse is a total waste of space on the grid.
Funny that this discussion arises on a thread about a driver with gazillion times more talent than Narain, but who apparently doesn't deserve a seat in F1 because he's "too old" and stuff.
#237252
Yes, my mistake on the teammate it was indeed Monteiro. Though recheck your facts on the head to head, the first half was all Narain, and nil to Monteiro.

I am one of those supporting Nick and believe he deserves a decent car. I would even welcome him to McLaren to partner Lewis, he is definitely as capable as Jenson Button.

But bashing Narain just because of his age? He had one year in a crap car and DID show some talent contrary to what people say. I remember his driving that year, the way he took the car to the ragged edge and still kept it on track really got the commentators talking.
#237257
He's made a comeback once already, (testing for BMW for a year I believe) so that's his best option again. It's a pity but there's only x number of seats available for respectable cars.
