From the USA here :D, midwest, so kind of a lone duck when it comes to formula 1. Just had some questions over all. In 2010, there was the team Torro Rosso, but also Red Bull, but both had Red Bull decals. Why?

Also, is there going to be a team lotus, and a team renault, or a team lotus and renault lotus, 2 teams total 4 drivers? I am confused about that .

I love this sport, I hope it is as good as 2010 was :)

Hi there and welcome to the forum, and the divine sport of Formula 1.

Toro Rosso & Red Bull are 2 different teams, but they are both owned by the same person, Dietrich Mateschitz. This year, and probably last year, Red bull was the "Primary" team if you like, and Toro Rosso is Red Bull in Italian.....or is it Spanish? one of the two :)

Rumour has it that Toro Rosso are looking to break away from Mateschitz and the Red Bull team (read Mateschitz wants to sell them), so things could, and likely will, change in that camp.

The Lotus naming battle wages on, but at this moment in time there is a Team Lotus (Lotus racing from 2010, Tony Fernandes' crew), and Lotus Renault GP (Renault F1 from 2010). What their names will be by the end of the season is currently anyones guess.

Hope this helps, but ask anything else you like.

Welcome and don't feel too bad about being an F1 fan in the mid-west, there's a few on the forum. You should give yourself a proper introduction in the Introduction section.

Same ownership for Red Bull & Toro Rosso, so that explains the similar look. Toro Rosso is a "farm" team. As far as your Renault/Lotus question.... I have a headache. Read the posts on those topics so you could get a headache as well. :D

LOL, I guess I could have checked some other posts first, sorry about that, another question more of a loaded one I suppose, why is it that the USA doesn't have formula 1 as much? We have a lot of non-nascar type tracks here.

Toro = bull in either Italian or Spanish but "rosso" is not a Spanish word.

...why is it that the USA doesn't have formula 1 as much? We have a lot of non-nascar type tracks here.

Because F1 is run by an eccentric octogenarian Brit who won't do business with anyone unwilling to kiss his ring. There are developers in the Austin, Tx, area who presently are building a bespoke F1 circuit but it remains to be seen whether a race ever will take place there.

Don't shoot me, but is that guy, "Bernie Eckleston?" (spelling). Martin Brundle always seems to catch him on the grid, really strange guy. lol

Which part of the midwest are you from? I know what you mean about the lack of passion for F1; most people seem to only know about NASCAR or CART. I'm originally from a country where F1 supporters are fairly easy to find so it was a bit of a culture shock for me coming to live in the US of A!

Guys sharp though, and ruthless.

Toro Rosso and Red Bull have the same ownership. Toro Rosso also means Red Bull in Italian. So both team's major sponsor is Red Bull. Toro Rosso blood young drivers/talent and if they're good enough they'll be promoted to Red Bull (ala Vettel).

The Lotus that raced in 2010 were known as "Lotus Racing" after 1Malayasia F1 Team purchased the rights from David Hunt. But they are having a name change to "Team Lotus" in 2011. However they have no relationship to the the Lotus Road Cars/Group Lotus and "Team Lotus/Lotus Racing" was formed by the Malaysian businessman with the helo of the Malayasian government. Team Principal, Tony Fernandes has always created a "Team Air Asia" which he is the CEO at Air Asia. Team Air Asia will effectively be Lotus in the GP2 series (A F1 reserves series in a way). Formula Renault 3.5 Series (A F1 reserves series in way aswell) team Mofaz Racing is known as the "Lotus F1 Racing Junior Team" in 2010 after Mofaz Racing had entered into a collaboration with the team.

"Renault F1" sold 75% of the team to Luxembourg-based investment company Genii Capital at the end of 2009. After 2010 they sold the remaing 25% to "Group Lotus" (The Lotus Road Cars). So Lotus has become the title sponsor and the team will now be known as "Lotus Renault GP". Renault will have little involvment in the team but will still supply engines to them (Ironically they supply engines to "Team Lotus" aswell). "Group Lotus" have teamed up with ART Grand Prix in the GP2 Series and the GP3 Series (A reserve series to GP2). They will be known as Lotus ART in both series now. "Group Lotus" will sponsor Takuma Sato in the American Indycar series in 2011 too.

Group Lotus are saying that David Hunt did not have the right to sell the "Lotus" name and that "Team Lotus" (Malayasian version) shouldn't use it. "Team Lotus" had said they were going to use a livery similar to one used by the famous "Team Lotus" (The famous team which ran from 1958 to 1994 and won 7 contructor champions, 6 drivers championship, 73 races and a 102 pole postions). However "Lotus Renault GP" nicked the the idea and made up a livery pretty much the exact same to what "Team Lotus" were going to do. "Team Lotus" will use a similar livery to what they did in 2010.

Why doesn't the US see much F1? Because they just dont get it :P . You'll have a GP in 2012 in Austin, Texas. And you had a team called USF1 which was granted entry to the 2010 season but failed completely and never got to race.

The measure between insanity and genius...is only measured by success.

Toro Rosso is the former Minardi team, an Italian team known back then as F1 minnows. So, when Mateschitz bought the team, he renamed it in deference to its Italian roots as Toro Rosso (Red Bull in Italian).

Welcome to the forums, I'm also new here and have a lot of questions about Formula 1.
I'm also from USA (Tennessee) and people here only do NASCAR.. nothing else.
but I'm one of a kind and I absolutely hate NASCAR but LOVE Formula 1.

it just intrigues me that (from what I've seen so far) the teams and drivers really get a long.
like I was watching a Formula 1 race couple nights ago and at the end of the race everyone is happy for eachother and they give high fives/hugs/etc.
so that shows a lot of sportsmanship also, which is essential to any sport in my opinion.

If anyones cares to reply, how are grid starts chosen? do they do a race the day before the race and whoever has the fastest lap gets a better starting grid?
and also when does the next Formula 1 season start? from my understanding last season JUST ended?

You'll have to wait another 43 days or so for the new season to begin.
Starting grid position is determined by a rather exciting qualification procedure on the Saturday before the actual race.
