Marlboro extending title sponsorship deals with Ferrari

Marlboro is on the verge of extending its title sponsorship contract with both Ferrari and the Ducati MotoGP team. The existing deals run until the end of this season, but sources have revealed that discussions are at an advanced stage for them to be renewed until the end of 2014.

It is possible that Ferrari's deal could be announced as early as its new car launch, which takes place in Maranello on January 28.

Although tobacco sponsorship had originally been expected to be eradicated from F1, and many countries ban the display of sponsorship logos, Marlboro has continued its high-profile association with both F1 and MotoGP.

Seems a bit of an odd decision on Marlboro's part; can tobacco advertising be incorporated into an F1 car's design in any country now? I can't say I have seen any active advertisement of tobacco on any car in recent times; unless the association with Ferrari is enough to boost Marlboro's sales!

I'm thinking the association from numerous years of support hold their weight with the brand. A major sponsor does not have to be emblazed upon the side of a car, true fan's still realize and recognize a more subtle approach, jmo of course.

I really don't think there's any value in this deal for the Marlboro brand any more. Besides which, the whole thing is starting to feel unseemly.

More years to come of a blatant disrespect for the rules. Ferrari can get any title sponsor they like, I don't know why in this day and age they would want their brand to be associated with tobacco.

I hear HRT is going to be sponsored by Columbian drug lords.

Money talks! I hear $1 Billion over 10 years. That really is a lot. :yikes:

Thats 100 million a year, isnt that supposed to be the target spending for the teams according to their RRA agreement?

If its true, they practically have 10 years of F1 for free.

That was the current contract: 10 yrs @ $1B.
Now talk is about extending the contract to 2014.

I'm a non-smoker, so I don't like ciggys or their smell. But, they are not illegal.

I agree that they should not be directly advertised simply on the basis that young people shouldn't be influenced to start smoking. However, people who have made a conscious decision to smoke are entitled to chose which brand they prefer. Same as with alcohol.

Yes, smoking is dangerous, but you could argue that alcohol is more dangerous and, there are medicos that now believe sugar/fat/diet/diabetes pose a far greater risk than ciggys do. So, do we ban Johnnie Walker ads, or Burger King? I don't think so and, as long as it is not overt and is targeted to adults who want to continue smoking then I think its ok.

I think the point is Tobacco advertising has been or was meant to be banned from F1 we had teams like McLaren who had West as sponsor and abided by this and parted ways. And the thing that irks me is that Ferrari choose to ignore this and reap the benefits from such large sponsorship from a company that is meant to be banned.

So is that $1B for 4 years or 100million for 4 years?

Either way, Ferrari is going to be raking in the cash.

I don't know the specifics, but when you go by the word 'extended', I'd guess it would be $100m per annum until 2014.
