I agree in general about people's perceptions about f1 etc. and 1992 is a pretty good example in terms of the coverage, but unless you got different coverage than me in 1993 it's not true. I watched all of the races broadcast in '92 & '93 and have them all on VHS. Just last year I watched all of my 1993 videos, and the coverage actually often ignored Prost once he sailed into the distance and focussed on other battles through the field. The '93 season isn't a good example to use to highlight the perceived problem. The next example outside of '92 would likely be '94 if it weren't for the other issues that season that created controversy rather than overtaking and quality racing. It was only really at the end of the season that was saved with Japan then Australia, until then it was either Schumacher utterly dominates and sails into the distance unchallenged, or in his absence Hill dominates and sails into the distance unchallenged.
Edit: Ah I just read your post madbrad more thoroughly and see that you mentioned that the overtaking etc. was on camera and it was more about perception of others who don't watch..... well all I'd say to that is that you can't legislate for idiots. If someone said that to me I'd usually say to them - 'did you actually watch the race?' and when they grudgingly admit 'no', I'd simply tell them that they are in fact wrong. Always dangerous to live on assumptions...
