I don't understand why scientists want to resurrect any creature that has died out; it's natural evolution, survival of the fittest, why mess with that?

Certain species didn't die out per se, more like hunted out of extinction. When we as a species had no regard for what was being done. The mammoth is one very visible animal, but there are dozens of species that have died out because of the direct impact mankind has done to their environment, not because of a "natural" evolution.

Ah yes, but you can also argue that based upon the "survival of the fittest" idea; man is the fittest so is that any different to one animal hunting another animal to extinction?

Sometimes for one species to thrive; another must die out!

Animals don't hunt for sport and they certainly don't waste a thing... we on the other hand will kill a shark just for it's fins, or a Rhyno for it's tusk... we can also hun a disproportionately LARGE amount of animals, without regards for the prey/predator balance.

I saw last year a guy with a lynx in his vehicle, he'd hunted it and had it stuffed... I talked to him briefly about it, and the only thing that kept going through my mind is why anyone would kill such an animal needlessly. I've no problem with deer hunting or even overgrown populations of bears, but we have only been acting responsibly for the last 50 or 60 years...

I can't argue about that comment; Animals don't hunt for sport (as far as we understand), but it should be about preserving the species and not resurrection; especially an animal that died out thousands of years ago; yes the Mammoth may have been hunted to extinction but it was for food, not sport; sports hunting is a relatively new occupation!

Just consider it a practice run for when we want/need to 'resurrect' current species that die out because of us. The San Diego Zoo where I used to work has the largest 'Frozen Zoo' in the world stored in liquid nitrogen and ready to be used if necessary.

My argument has always been that its natural for man to want to advance and push the scientific limits and so ressurection of extinct species is a natural occurence.Same could be said for natural/man made materials, technically man made materials are natural having been made as a result of the nature of mans thinking.

Hang on my brains just parachuted out my head...

Like I said the Mammoth is very visible. But how about other animals that were hunted to extinction recently... in the last 100 years because man landed on their island... and killed them all for food, like the dodo, or the Carolina Parakeet. or the Japanese Sea Lion or the Baiji River Dolphin... all killed by man for various reasons whether clearing land, or hunting for pelt or pollution. Why if we had the ability to bring those back, wouldn't we?

Here's some food for thought, we ([wo]man) are constantly raping the earth for it's resources and there have been some casualties along the way; one day mother nature will take her revenge and wipe man off the planet; we are already seeing it, extreme weather is becoming more common even in places where extreme weather isn't common!

So what's it going to be; a huge meteor impact; a huge solar flare or mass extreme weather? Or in reality; none of the above, I have my "I told you so" T-shirt ready for December 22nd 2012! It's a win/win, if it happens, I'll never get to wear it, if the end of the world doesn't happen, I can wear my T-shirt and look smug! :P:hehe:

You're gonna look pretty stupid wearing that in your plane dodging falling cities.
