Uhhh... if I cared much, I'd probably remember details... but as it is, much as I can recall LH had his flying lap before FA and was supposed to let FA through a lap later... instead he decided on his own to have another flying lap and was basically racing FA and did slow him down... according to FA, at least.
As a result FA spent 10 seconds longer in pitstop killing LH's chance to leave pit on time to get another flying lap. Reports (reliable or not) said that after qualifications one of Hamiltons was seen near the stewards office. Was he there to complain - was he there at all - and would stewards punish FA anyway, with or without complain... I don't know.
It was mentioned on some F1 sites that LH and RD exchanged a few rude words over the radio, including one that starts with F and end with K (with 2 more letters in between) that originated from LH and was directed to RD. That was demanded later, though. However, after qualifications FA said that at that point team was not really in talking terms with LH (whole team, his part of the team - no idea). I also recall that RD was looking very unhappy after quals but all he said was something like "things are happening when you have 2 overly competitive drivers". But then again, Ron never liked exposing team's dirty laundry anyway...
I guess I might have forgot or mixed some details, so if anyone feels like correcting me, please do.
Right, to put the facts in order:
McLaren had agreed that Alonso would take to the track first because unlike a few tracks at Hungary the driver at the front of the qualy queue can squeeze in another lap over those further back, meaning lower petrol for the lap and hence an advantage.
As he was in the habit of doing by this time, Hamilton lined up first in the queue, whether by intention or mistake (only Hamilton knows which). As they went out on the fuel burn laps Mclaren asked Hamilton to let Alonso past. LH explained later that the reason he didn't was because Alonso wasn't keeping up with him and Raikkonen could have taken advantage. Again the serving suggestion is a pinch of salt.
Alonso pitted to get tyres for his first qualifying run, and having lost his slot for an extra lap they hold him back to put him on schedule to start his final hot lap 10-20 seconds before the chequered flag. As this happens a tyre warmer gets caught on one of the wheels, but this is immaterial in terms of his timing.
At the end of their first hot laps, Alonso sets the pole lap but is immediately bettered by LH, who is behind him on the track, but a lap up. McLaren tell LH to slow down a little on the in-lap to save the tyres as he has some time in hand.
Alonso pits, tyres are changed. The lollypop goes up but Alonso doesn't budge, with LH queued up behind. After about ten seconds Alonso sets off to set the fastest lap of the session. Hamilton races to get to the line in time but is out of time, by less than 10 seconds. This actually meant both cars completed the same number of laps overall, but Hamilton only did one flying lap as he last stint was reduced to an out-lap and an in-lap.
Subsequently, Alonso claims his wait at the second was so that he could check the team have given him the right tyres, citing the confusion in his first stop. Ron Dennis denies that Hamilton "used the F word", although from that non-denial denial it seems likely anglo-saxon was involved in some form...
Now the difference is that Hamilton broke team orders, while Alonso broke one of the sporting regulations. The stewards called all the various parties in to explain their side of the story, possibly explaining why Hamilton was seen near the stewards office.
As for whether the team stopped taking to
Hamilton at this point, that's the first I've heard of it, although as part of his submission to the World Motorsports Council shortly before the Belgian GP Ron Dennis stated that he had not personally spoken to Alonso after their arguement on the morning of the Hungarian GP.
Jim Clark, Monza, one lap down...
