I can see Schumi being replaced by Nico Hulkenburg at the end of 2011. He should not have returned.

You might have to bite your tongue if Merc is decent, coz I would never underestimate a 7 time WDC!
Yes,thats how many Senna,Alonso,Lewis&Kimi have combined!

I was one of the ones who said he shouldn't have made the comeback, but, I agree with F1er, if Merc gives him a competitive car, don't count Shumi out.

7 years he was the leading points holder, same as Prost with Alonso :)

5 + 2 = 7

But note I said leading points scorer, not WDC :-)

You said leading points holder, but yeah, I figured, knowing you - just wanted it clarified

ESPNF1: Title possible before 2013
Michael Schumacher has reiterated that his comeback with Mercedes is a three-year project and that he still intends to take his eighth world championship within that time frame.

Schumacher's first year back in the sport did not meet expectations, leading to calls for his second retirement by the end of the season. However, Schumacher has maintained that last year's Bridgestone tyres and certain handling traits in Mercedes' 2010 car are the reason behind his struggle and that he will come back stronger in 2011.

"Fighting for the world championship is still our goal, it can only be like this. Hey, we are Mercedes," he told his official website. "But this is a three-year project, and even if obviously it would be nicer if it worked out sooner, we are talking about competing at the absolute peak of motorsport. You cannot just come along, put a new team together and beat everybody. But you can be sure that we are working very hard with all our combined power to achieve our aims."

He admitted that some of the criticism aimed at him over the season had been deserved.

"That is okay for me, I haven't looked good all the time either," he said. "I can live with criticism very well, you just have to differentiate it and it can bring you forward as well.

"What is much more important is that I deeply enjoy building what we are building here at this team and that is always the best base for success because you do not need to question the motivation. And please don't get me wrong here; you don't question the seriousness either. I can't wait already to get the new season started."

I can't really decide if it is him..or his car. On one hand...Webber was not long ago the picture boy of "Never had it, Never will"...but in a car that suits him...front runner. Jenson...not long ago same thing....now WDC. Hamilton...up one year, down the next, up again.

The cars are so complex, the aero so very touchy....it seems to me that pretty much any driver on the grid can be WDC the year after struggling to score a single point....if only his team hits the setup lottery. I am no Schuey fan...but I just can't bring myself to say he has lost it. Maybe he has...but it's too soon for me to say.

Couldn't explain it better myself.

Think this is very very naive. Schumacher can command what he chooses to do or not do. If he chooses to stay on for another two or even possibly more years, Mercedes will support him unless he really was doing consistently poorly. However if he continued to do poorly into the third year, I have a strong feeling he would stop of his own accord.

What I can guarantee is that he won't have the same slow start to the season in 2011 that he did in 2010, especially not in a car that he has helped to develop and on tyres that he already has said he likes much better. Unless the car is a complete dog, I'd be fairly confident that he will get podiums at the least in 2011.

Indeed, I'm quite sure that were it not for the testing ban last year and he got more miles in during the early part of the season to adjust to cars that are much different beasts to what they were when he had last raced in 2006, he would likely have had another 20-30 points on top of what he ended up with.

I really think some people seriously underestimate the level of driver / racer / concentration / skill / determination / consistency etc. it takes to actually get a F1 car round a track once on an empty track, let alone with 20+ others in the heat of battle. I don't think anybody would be able to walk straight back and win immediately after a full three years out of the sport at the current level these guys are operating on. I think personally Schumacher did very well to be competing for points in most of the races he was in given that there were 6 better cars from the start, and 8 (the Renaults) by the end of the season, along with the always improving Williams amongst others...

2011 I think many (if they're not expecting it!) will be in for a surprise at how much Schumacher raises his game...

In my opinion Michael Schumacher is absolutely involved in the Mercedes project in F1, but not only as a driver. They’re building one of the most powerful teams for the future, and I firmly believe that MS will continue in the team playing a main role after retiring. He didn’t get it at Ferrari, where they treated him almost like a decorative figure. I think that it didn’t fit with MS character and ambitions, because even when he was just a driver in Ferrari, he used to be fully involved in every decision taken at his team.

Interesting read/opinion. Schumacher's performance in 2011 will be very interesting.
