OK...from the outset I will say that this is not an attempt to open a political "firestorm" on this site, but since we have a good mixture of nations represented here I was keen to understand what people's thoughts are on the actions of the website Wikileaks.

As you know, the Australian founder is now being accused of anything from high treason to ****..... but I personally just can't get past the simple fact that in a democratic society the freedom of the press and freedom of information laws are designed to ensure that governments are held accountable for their actions by their people.

I live in Singapore, where the state owned media control pretty much everything, which is a constant negative point that most international governments complain about.....but the "charges" against Wikileaks make Singapore look like an open and free media service.

Wikileaks are not guilty of any espionage.... they received all of their material through sources who may have committed crimes themselves.

Just interested to hear other opinions.

We live in an information age, some information is more valuable. We're not going back, so get used to these types of leaks and know that not all of them are bad and certainly some of them alert us to things going on we'd never be able to see otherwise. I think as an outcome we'll see governments tighten their information security considerably.

Cyber-terrorism as a a weapon is in the future and large internet backbones and trans continental cables will become frequent targets.

I don't really care about the things that are being leaked. During war there will always be cover ups but for one does anyone care about the otherside of the fense? They are fighting an invisible enemy which civilian to insurgent is indistinguishable. Taliban or insurgents don't follow the rules of war, so for no use of a better term f*** em!

There is no such thing as classified, there is only varying amounts of restricted information.

I am sure that every nation in the world has documents like wiki leaks has released and if you want to know then you will find out. All wiki leaks has done is bring the info to the general populus. which has caused outrage. Lets face it how many brits did not know what Prince Philip was like!?!? so is it a suprise that another nation complained about him?

I think Assange is sensitive about whats really going on the world. Some politicians, actually all of them are saying some untrue things and keeping some of realities secret. Its good to learn these.Although it can be harmful for some groups sometimes and can cause harsh arguments.Recently they have published some facts about the governments conversations with the US government. Our primary minister denies the facts but i dont believe him,i never believe him.

Personally I believe that having this information out in the open in a good thing, so Joe Public knows exactly what goes on behind closed doors, I believe people have the right to know about such things that can directly or indirectly effect our lives, there is too much secrecy in this world! Leaks have always happened, the Internet has simply made accessing this information much easier, I like the Internet and the true freedom of information it provides, unless your in China or North Korea of course!

Turn off your 'caps lock' or is it yet another US conspiracy? :hehe:

What 'caps lock'? The text is emboldened; why does it bother you so much?
