I really don't think the Spanish sponsors were too impressed with him openly bad-mouthing the team, and in the end it's non-Spanish markets where they really stand to gain from sponsorship, since they're already well established domestically. Clearly Ron Dennis wouldn't have shed a tear at his departure, and once he'd made sure Santander, Mutua Madrileña and so on were still sticking with McLaren he sought a way to get Alonso to agree to leave.
