I really don't think the Spanish sponsors were too impressed with him openly bad-mouthing the team, and in the end it's non-Spanish markets where they really stand to gain from sponsorship, since they're already well established domestically. Clearly Ron Dennis wouldn't have shed a tear at his departure, and once he'd made sure Santander, Mutua Madrileña and so on were still sticking with McLaren he sought a way to get Alonso to agree to leave.

The latest news/rumors indicate that some of the Spanish sponsors are willing to jump ship and follow FA to Renault or wherever he'll go.

Let them, I'm sure McLaren isn't short of sponsors including Vodaphone. The need to get rid of FA and restore team morale was pretty obvious. He had to go, fired or parting of ways.

Hopefully he'll behave himself elsewhere with no.1 status.

Of course he was fired. If anyone kept up with the news/rumor sites, Alonso was trying to mend fences with a mind to staying another year. Remember when Merc had that board meeting, and the reports were they sacked Alonso? That was when it was decided.

There might be a year left or not contractually. I'm sure with enough grease, they can get out of it. And McLaren probably wouldn't want an unhappy Spanish sponsor with them anyway...

FA left McLaren for a good reason. He would have no more to do with the McLaren team. They cheat and give themselves and there country to shame.
