Could be internal, i.e., a testing role.

DD just look past your McLaren grudge for once ;)

No McLaren grudge - just RD.

Uh, this from somebody who's been on the anti-Ferrari 'sheep' and anti-MS bandwagon for how long? Since I've met you about, hm, 7 years ago?

doubt they could break a race drivers contract to just test! im sure that driver would love that! i think he would go to the contract recognitions board about that one!
i mean afterall we are talking high to midfield teams here afterall its not a Spykyer driver who im sure has in his contract where the team can drop him to a test roll if see fit

One could sweeten the deal with a contractual guarantee to have a seat the following year once the other driver's contract expires. Sorta like a Massa move as a tester for a year.

Well obviously it's Alonso and not McLaren that is dictating the driver transfer market at this moment in time... And i'll bet a few drivers fancy that McLaren seat... the ones who know they'll never win the title so are hoping to get a race win or two. Which isn't saying much....

Renault, Toyota, Red Bull, BMW, whatever team has shown an interest in him - and the drivers or potential drivers for those teams are kinda blocked as to making decisions until FA announces where he goes.

those teams have binding contracts those drivers wont want out unless they have a place to go,

this is where McLaren has the power!

I, for once, have to agree with DD - hottest property of this transfer season is FA. No contest. Except, maybe, if MS decides to give it another go (which he will not, still it would be interesting to see).

I also can't see too many real good driver that McLaren can choose between. Almost none. HK aside (and it is still too early to say if he is real deal) who else can switch in? I also would not be surprised if some of them would decide to skip McLaren - just by looking how FA did there. As FA was 2X champ and LH was in his rookie year, I'd say next season Hamilton clan will be even stronger within McLaren... I really would not like to see that, but wouldn't be surprised if LH doesn't grow into MS kind of alpha driver in a few years...

I don't know about drivers fearing Hamilton, no sensible driver says no to a quick car, especially in a team that has a policy of equal status. Hamilton could have bad luck with reliability - just look at Massa this year. If his luck and Kimi's luck were reversed, Massa could just have eeked out the title. Also being Senna's team-mate never did Gerhard Berger any harm, he was able to win races he wouldn't have anywhere else.

Mercedes will love a German - Throw in Rosberg and throw in Sutil aswell although i dont think McLaren will want two 2nd year drivers

Ron would love a Finn - throw in Heikki and wait Rosbergs half Finnish, Ron would like him too

answer Rosberg

Now its how much will Sir Frank be willing to let him go for....

Id agree with here Bud. I remember the uproar when Button tried to get out of his contractual obligations, I think the good ol' FIA will have an opinion on contract breaking. That means FA can only (easily) go to an open seat. If he's not allowed to go to a manufacturer, then I can't see how he's controlling the driver market as he has a very limited number of options.

No german driver has ever driven a McLaren Mercedes in F1, their last German driver was HH Frentzen in a Sauber in 1994...

I personally think Rosberg is out of the running, Kovalainen is McLaren's preferred choice, and Sutil is the last resort short of bringing De la Rosa in.

Uh, you wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't or does become an alpha driver?
