Car's go slower around the safety car, so you lose less time in that sense through being slow because of pitting.

Cars will lose about 23 seconds in the pits. Cars that pit under the safety car but don't fall a lap behind then catch back up to the train of cars behind the safety car. Hence, they lose track position, but catch up the time that they lost. A big advantage. When the cars that didn't pit under he safety car pit, those that did pit, get ahead. Big time. That's how Rosberg and Petrov got ahead of Alonso, Webber, and Massa.
