Just wondered if anyone has worked-out what the points would have been on the old system?

Interested to see but with two kids don't have the time or energy to work it out. Sorry.

Geez, how I miss the old points system. I look at the current one and see random numbers. Wiht the old one I actually see a well laid out comparison of the drivers.

Personally I love the new points system; with seven points difference between first and second it gives the drivers a bigger incentive to go for the win. And you have to wonder if the old points system was used; would we still have such a close battle between drivers? I don't recall a four way battle going into the final race in my 18 years watching F1!

Well, as can be seen, there WOULD have been a four-way battle. In-fact it just so happens that there is little difference. With Button now 18 points behind Alonso, he's out of it. Hamilton, being 7 points behind would have been in the battle going into the final race.

So, little has changed. The numbers are bigger, the actual up-shot result is the same. Alonso, Webber, Vettel & Hamilton, in that order.

Having sounded critical of the new system I add that I do like the added 'win incentive'. I don't remember a four-way battle either, but this year would have been the same, even with the old points system.

They could have simply added 1 or 2 pts per win to the old system.......

The old system was just an old system. Not good, not anything really. It did need some thought and the new system of points is a good idea. (IMO)

The idea of this analysis was just to see what, if any, difference it has made, and how the championship standings would have looked had the system not changed.

Looks the same if you ask me. If we're being really critical though, it just happens to seem as though the old system would have produced an even closer battle going into the finale. I'm not just saying that because the numbers are smaller, but the difference from Alonso to Hamilton is a second place finish to win (assuming 0 for Alonso and very few points for the Red Bulls) I know it is unlikely, but my point is it would have been closer.

Who has had the most wins? Bernie had a bonkers idea to make the champion from the most 'actual' wins didn't he?

What I meant is that if the points difference between first and second was still two points, would we have seen the same aggressive racing for the lead? seven points is a much bigger incentive to challenge for the lead than two points as it was in the previous points system!

Right now Alonso has 5, Vettel and Webber (sorry Webber and Vettel) 4, Hamilton 3, Button 2. I thought it was interesting that there are no surprise victories this year....

Less chance of surprise victories if there are many competitive teams around. If it was just 2 teams (the norm) fighting it out, the rest of the drivers could qualify as 'surprise wins'.

I never did the math on the old points system.

Before you know it, there will be NASCAR points and we will have drivers at 1,500 points. (exchange rate)

The new points system is alright imo.

Although thinking this new system makes drivers push more for the win is wrong.

Drivers must take care of engine, tyres and try not to follow too close in curves to win positions, if you are too agressive your tyres may say byebye and you have to worry about how many cycles your engine has gone through before pushing it too much.

So imo, the new points system can't do anything to make drivers push more for wins, at least, being F1 how it is.

I prefer the old system....besides the new one wrecks all the history of points. Sure this system rewards winning but F1 isn't all about winning. But really whats the difference between the old one and new one. Alonso is still ahead and Webber is just behind with Vettel lerking just behind. And then you have Hamilton as an outside chance. Whats changed?

I disagree; if a driver settles for three second places instead of challenging for the lead; he will be almost one race win behind without the other driver finishing in the cheap seats. That's the incentive; especially with the drivers/teams being closer this year, with the exception of the refuelling ban, the points system is the only real change!

Yes it has worked out the same in both old and new systems; but we weren't racing under the old system so we don't know if the season would have played out the same way!
