Ok, somebody explain this to me:

The rules prevented Ferrari from re-deploying this engine for anything other than free practice sessions, after it was replaced in Bahrain as a precaution due to the F60 almost overheating. But because Abu Dhabi is the season finale, Alonso is allowed to use any engine in his allocation there, and the Bahrain qualifying unit is extremely low on mileage.


The first rule about preventing: which rule is that?
And then: since it's the season finale - huh? Different rules for the last race?

There is a difference between engines changed during the event (e.g. Parc ferme) and between events.
The application of the rule is covered in the image below which is part of the Technical Report for Singapore this year. The engine Felipe changed, although there was nothing wrong with it, can now only be used again at the last event (excluding practice sessions of course).

SR 28.4 e) If an engine is changed in accordance with Article 34.1 the engine which was replaced may not be used during any future qualifying session or race with the exception of the last Event of the Championship.

SR 34.1 prescribes permitted work while in post-qualifying parc fermé.

The engine situation is a worry for Ferrari but the blown engine in P1 wasn't expected to last and they still have the lightly-used Bahrain engine for Abu Dhabi - as long as it's not full of sand.
