Alonso as good as Senna - Berger

Fernando Alonso can be mentioned in the same breath as Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher according to former Formula One driver Gerhard Berger. Coming from Berger, who was Senna's team-mate and great friend, it is high praise indeed.

"There are sometimes those special drivers: Ayrton Senna was one, Michael Schumacher was one, and Alonso is one," Berger told Austria'a Servus TV.

Schumacher won the first two of his seven world titles in a Benetton that was arguably inferior to the Williams driven by arch-rival Damon Hill. Similarly, Alonso won his two world titles in 2005 and 2006 in a Renault that many regarded as not the quickest car in the field.

And although Senna enjoyed superior equipment to his rivals in 1988 and 1990, he did well to hold off Nigel Mansell's Williams in 1991 and was able to win races in 1992 and 1993 despite the dominance of the Grove team. for Berger, this is the difference between the good and the great.

"They are drivers who can win world championships without having the absolute best car."

Should Alonso go on to win the drivers' title in 2010, he will join Senna, Schumacher and an elite band of drivers to have won three or more world titles. What is more, he will be the youngest driver to have achieved the feat.

ROFL the same people that ridiculed berger only yesterday for his webber crash comments are now quoying him now it suits there agenda, alonsos renault was superior to the ferrari btw so none of that. alonso is in the same group as senna and schumi IMO but so are hakkinnen, lauda, piquet, prost... its called the multiple wdc group, didnt need berger to tell us that.

I don't see the Alonso/Senna thing myself. Alonso does not have the same single minded drive that Senna did. I know Alonso has shown it this year by his abuse of Massa, I only ever remember Senna being harsh but fair with his team mates.

Time will tell but, I agree with Berger.
Alonso has two maybe three more titles with his name on em... :drink:

I can actually see some similarities between the two. Both ruthless and not too personable. Disliked by teammates, excel despite inferior equipment.

One major difference is Alonso smiles more despite his disfigurement (unibrow).

Alonso is a living legend; I think he will stop at 3 maybe 4 WDCs but he will be mentioned in the same breath as Prost. If he wins this year he'd be upgraded to legendary status. :wavey:

I still want someone to ram him off the road in Brazil though. :P:twisted:

Should the Ferrari become a dominating car he will have titles coming out his butt hole in a few years. Wait am I experiencing deja vu?
