Formula One related discussion.

Hello everybody,

My name is Richard James, I am a professional aerospace engineer and I have been a motorsport fan since childhood. Like almost all motorsport enthusiasts I have become disheartened by the mechanical sameness of most series and the lack of action and overtaking, especially in Formula 1. So I decided to put my aerospace root cause analysis skills to use and have a go at trying to solve the problems. The results of my efforts are here - http://www.divergentgovernance.co.uk and I would like you to please let me know what you think.

As a heads up to what this idea has achieved so far; it is being debated by Indycar as a possible method to ensure mechanical diversity within the open aero rules for their 2012 car. I am also working very closely with an ex FIA technical consultant who has suggested it is vital to gain as much publicity for my idea as possible, hence the website and this post. The concept will be featured shortly in Racecar Engineering Magazine and it is to be validated by Cambridge University. So, in summary, it is slowly gathering momentum but it requires far more critical mass. This is a powerful voice for the fans to shout loud and clear about what they want to see. This is the reason I am asking you read it, get enthused, and to go forth and spread the word.

Really hope you like it,

Rich

This is a great idea.. one thing i always loved about f1 was all the cars are different, its a race series about building your own car.. not unlike some spec series where they get handed a chassis and the only thing the team can do is have mechanics maintain it...

I guess this would overtake pretty much everything on the track today.
I do wonder though if RB could find a way to loose even with this.....

Lots of people debate this problem within F1.

Half the People say "it aero get rid of double diffusers" and the other half say too much mechanical grip - since its such a huge disadvantage to go off the racing line, and hence why you see more overtaking in the wet.

Does this purely look at Aero or is it mechanical as well?

...Gaz, yes it looks at everything including aero and mechanical grip.

...and other technology that diminishes the significance of the driver, like systems telemetry that can be monitored from the pits.

One of the suggestions that caught my eye was to return to manual gearboxes. I'd call that a positive step but, since Ferrari are all flappy paddle shifters, all the time, I reckon it is highly unlikely that F1's 800-lb gorilla ever would go along with that willingly.

Tough sell, to be sure.

Hi Vaptin,

I didn't publicise at all before calling the IRL but, amazingly, they read it, liked it and passed it onto members of the ICONIC committee. I still have dialogue with them and members of the committee, and it is upon thier advice that I now act. Get it validated (Cambridge Uni) develop fan interest (forum posts) and get it featured in the press (Racecar Engineering + others I have started to contact). There is still much work to do and I'll contact the forum to see if they would like to run a feature.

Fred, Hi, have you given the doc. a read yet??

Hansy, Thanks for your faith.
