Is anyone aware that on the 4th of October Sauber signed 20 year-old Mexican driver to replace Heidfeld next year?

Sauber has signed Sergio Perez to race for the team in 2011. The 20-year old Mexican driver will line up alongside Kamui Kobayashi. The team has also announced a partnership with Telmex, which will have “a significant presence on the Sauber Motorsport racing cars” from the start of next year.

“Sauber has been not only a very successful racing team but also a strong talent developer of some of the most recognized names in racing since their early stages as well as one of the most respected people in the sport,” says Telmex chairman Carlos Slim Donit. “Their decision of having Sergio with them is very significant on his career to become a top driver representing Mexico. For Telmex and our racing project Escuderia Telmex it’s a great step forward, and we feel very proud to be able to consolidate these years of work for having a Mexican driver in F1 with Sauber Motorsport.”

Peter Sauber says that his team is happy and proud to be in a relationship with the Mexican telecommunications company.

“Telmex is an outstanding company and represents a strong partner for our team,” he said.

Perez has been a member of Escuderia Telmex, which supports racing drivers in various categories, for a number of years. He finished second in this year’s GP2 Series, winning four races – including the prestigious championship round in Monaco – in the process. Sergio began his career in karting, where he won a total of five championships. He followed that up with two years in Formula BMW before moving on to the National Class of the British F3 International Series, where he won a still record 14 races. In 2008 he finished fourth in the International Class of the British F3 International Series. In GP2 Asia he became the series’ youngest race winner at the age of 18.

“Formula 1 is the dream of every young racing driver,” Perez ays. “And now this dream is about to come true for me. Although I’m very much aware that this is also a big challenge and responsibility, I’m happy to accept that and am proud to be representing my country in the highest category of motor racing. I would like to thank Peter Sauber for the faith he’s shown in me and I’ll do everything I can to make the most of this wonderful opportunity.”

It looks like it hasn't been mentioned here, and OP isn't updated. I read this a week ago on Wikipedia and thought that was very interesting, but I was surprised that I hadn't heard about it here first...

It's very interesting because Heidfeld is still very much on the market for a race seat next year.

Where could he go?

Renault? Ferrari? Or will he end up at Virgin Racing to replace Di Grassi? Those are the only seats jumping out at me that could have replacements...

Maldanando to Williams. To be honest, I'd be shocked to see it go ahead. Rubens is contracted for next year. So that would mean getting rid of Hulkenburg, which would be stupid in my opinion. Nico deserve's another year, not forgetting that he still has massive potenial. There's nothing Maldanando would do better in Williams compared to Hulkenburg.

Also, apparently Luzzi has a contract for next year, whilst Sutil doesn't. Di Reista and Luzzi at Force India for 2011?? Doesn't make much sense to me either. Surely Force India would rather see Sutil and Di Reista next year. A contract to be ended early perhaps??

Doubt there'll be much movement in the drivers market this year, much like 2008-2009 where the only teams who made driver changes where STR and Red Bull.

I finally have to disagree with you now...

Sir Williams has had some money issues lately and next year things may get worse. Four sponsors has already announced that they wont put their logotype on the Grove-based car.

The first one is the Scottish bank, RBS, which almost went bankrupt in the last financial crisis between 2008 and 2009.They werent out this year because they couldn't rescind the contract, but they've payed USD 11 millions less than what they payed before.

The second one is Air Asia, owned by Tony Fernandes. They will sponsor Lotus next year whereas sponsoring a rival team doesn't make sense at all.

Third, the dutch company, Philips. Probably the second most important Williams' sponsor. And, finally, McGregor won't put their money in the team as well and will do same thing that HP, FedEx, Petrobras,Allianz, Budweiser and Lenovo did in the last yeats. Sad history to the team who was sponsored by many important companies like Saudia Airlines, Canon, Camel, Rothmans etc.

Among the most important sponsors, only AT&T will remain next year.

The situation is so critical that Barrichello agreed with a wage reduction for next year.

As if it all wasnt enough, Hulkenber/Weber asked a 250% wage increase in order to stay next year, and Nico doesnt even bring any sponsor to the team.
And Maldonado ssems to be a great driver, finally he got a seat in a F1 car. Not to mention that he probably will bring PDVSA, CanTV and the Venezuelan Government with him.

For me, that's a really good new!!

well if the williams team need the money it does make sense but it would be a shame because i think the point was raised earlier in the subject about the young lad maldando coming in because what you have to ask yourself is this? what hulkenburg is doing now..would he do any better?

As unlikely as it is, it is just so mouth watering to think about Lewis and Fernando in the same team again. And, the Team being Ferrari, both contracts have the "I must support the team above all" clause. Can you imagine what a great season that would be, both racing for Ferrari and both being slapped into line by Ferrari.

I know it probably wouldn't happen, but I'd love to see it, sometime in the future.

This was an interesting quote - ""You never know what's going to happen and you can never say never. But I look at the cars, and of course we've not always had the best car."

For the record, if he signed a Ferrari contract, I'd welcome him.
