It's sad that a bunch of non-professional (but admittedly keen) f1 fans can sit around pointing out flaws in the rule book. We're not the hardcore nerds picking on minor details, these are things that actually matter and effect championship results, I know its complex but surely they must employ people with f1 knowledge to go through the proposed rules and think, "what if this happens?".

Actually, you're right, and on more than one level.
The way the rules are written is one thing, but then again there is the "interpretations" that seem to come into play.
Over the past two decades, the standards of equipment safety, teams and driver skills have dramatically improved. We expect drivers to undergo rigorous medical and licensing tests etc. The drivers work in simulators to hone and improve their reaction skills - to fractions of seconds. But what tests and training do the officials go through? Perhaps there needs to be some heavy focus on providing training and tests for those who are supposed to officiate so we can get good, speedy and consistent rulings that, as you mentioned, follow the intent of the rules.

Yeah, but it was an effective "free change", different issue though, but still an issue with various easily spotted loopholes, lets just say "its not in the spirit of the rules".

I do see what you're saying.
It's kinda like getting a drive-through penalty but not loosing any places :-)

Yeah or breaking team order rules and not losing any points. :)

Like the team order to let Alonso out first in Quali?

Or write a rulebook that makes sense, has penalties built in and defined and can be read and understood by even the lowest moron...which seems to be the criteria for being a steward anyway.

 we needed more common sense from the stewards and with the drivers help...thats happening! long may this continue

Stewards haven't been much of a problem this year, probably down to the ex driver input, and I also think Jean Todt reorganised them in some other way?

The problem is the FIA rule book, the regulations with kers coming back (and mandatory) and a ban on the DDD are looking good, but the cost cutting aspect along with inconsistency/ lack of "common sense" with "race procedures" (eg Schumacher in Monaco penalty, the wording of the ban on team orders, the limit on punishments stewards can give out) still needs a serious overhaul.

Bah, don't say it sounding surprised :whip::irked:

Aww, you normally disagree with me :yikes:

Yes.

Is this another point we agree on?
