my buddy in Korea tells me already there are concerns with infrastructure and track surface and seems hotels are miles away for team members

That was purposely designed... in case the Democratic People's Republic of Korea attacks during race weekend.

I have just got off the phone from a mate who works in Seoul (for a large vehicle manufacturer), and there is some interesting information he's got about this new track.

Apparently they have been quietly running some "test" groups of local touring type cars to get an understanding of issues with their track preparations. The groups that have used the track so far have reported that tyre deterioration is "incredibly severe".... one car apparently made 3 laps before shredding fronts on a less than 1200kg touring car.

This is going to be interesting. If Bridgestone turn up with a "soft" or "super soft" option tyre, it may very well determine the race outcome.

Anyway...thought you may be interested.

Firstly thanks for sharing this inside information HD. Keep it coming :-)
One thought I had was when did they do these trials. As I understand it, there was quite a few days between the laying of the initial asphalt and the final layer. It is only the top/finishing layer that is very smooth. I could understand if they were suffering the tyre degradation you described if they were running on the initial layers of asphalt.

Mucho gracias and kindly ask your mate for any other details he may hear and send him a thank you from us  .

Bridgestone are taking the soft and the hard. A little conservative but multiple tyre stops will be forced because the new tyre will be probably 2 seconds a lap faster so look for a Canada repeat :cloud9:

This is hotting up to be a pretty good race actually, I kind of doubted this race because I just thought it would not be ready in time but now I think otherwise.

Anyone else remember the 2 1/2-hour pause in this year's Daytona 500 because a chunk of the tarmac came loose? Their cars are much kinder to the circuit and, like it or not, them NASCAR boys know how to lay some asphalt.

I've got 50 quid on the safety car appearing over at SkyBet. Wish they also were making book on the race being delayed/interrupted over craters appearing in the asphalt.

a canadian gp repeat would make things very exciting!, so i think friday practice is going to be busy with action so that they can learn the circuit's character for real rather than rely on a simulator....

it'll be a very tough race as i can tell , four drivers are willing to go for podium ( Mark Webber , Jenson Button , Lewis Hamilton , Sebastien Vettel) my hope goes to the driver thats always on podium , Mark Webber

Mark Webber believes the inaugural Korean Grand Prix could give him the win which will edge him towards his first Formula 1 drivers' championship.

Webber leads the standings by 14 points from Ferrari's Fernando Alonso and Red Bull team-mate Sebastian Vettel as F1 steps into the unknown at Yeongam.
"We all have to go there, see the track and get on with the job - it's the same for everyone," said the Australian.
"I need to win again and, of course, I am very confident I can do that."
Webber reiterated that, with three races to go - and following the introduction this season of 25 points for a win - it is too early to back off and play the percentages.
The 34-year-old, who finished second behind Vettel at last Sunday's Japanese Grand Prix, said: "No, I can't think like that. It won't be enough. I need to keep racing hard and going for victories".

The track can be crap, I don't care.

I just love that we are going to have a race in Korea. I like imagining Kim Jong-il watching.... it's suuuuuch a lovely mental image
