Hey all,
I'm struggling to confirm the exact engine count for the 5 title contenders coming into the Japanese GP....can anyone with 100% confidence confirm the following:

Webber and Vettel= Both have 1 fresh engine left
Button and Hamilton= Both have 1 fresh engine left
Alonso= Has no engines left (like Massa who therefore had to take a 10 spot grid penalty in Singapore)

The only one I'm not sure of is Vettel

Please help?

If a driver blows his number 8 engine in a race (and therefore doesn't finish)....and then takes a fresh engine for the next GP (therefore engine number 9)....do the also take a grid penalty at the next GP?

Yes.
However, he does have the option to use one of his other engines, ie #'s 1-7 assuming he hasn't blown all those up as well. If he uses say engine 6, then there is no penalty.

Alonso is going to have to take a fresh one in the next 4 races.

Not necessarilly. He can use: 6, 7, 7, 8.
Assuming they wont use the left over from Bahrain, which must have suffered quite harshly as almost everyone changed it.

But yes, the situation is difficult. Although he theoretically has enough engines available, he may go for one change. The question is, strategically when would it be best to take the penalty and have a fresh engine worth a couple races........

Alonso will need to take a fresh engine...there is no way he'll get through the remainder of the season on number 8....and he's shagged the rest of them I'm fairly sure.

Without wanting to pour too much cold water on your celebration of Nando's supposed engine woes, but, Nando will not use a 9th engine this year, and he won't use any engine more than 3 times - exactly the same as both McLaren's.
Mind you, it seems Lewis has found a way of reducing his engine running time, apparently it doesn't have to run while the cars being repaired :hehe:

It's funny how you guys went from writing him off for the championship this season to hoping he needs to take en engine penalty because he is such a threat for the title now
