F1 mourns the death of former Lotus boss Peter Warr, 72
A young Nigel Mansell made his name under Warr at Lotus in the early 80s
Formula 1 is in mourning after the death of former Lotus team boss Peter Warr, who died on Monday aged 72.
Warr was team manager under founder Colin Chapman and ran the team for seven years, working with Nigel Mansell and Ayrton Senna in their early days.
"When Peter was in F1 he helped me to build it to what it is today," said F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone.
After a long career Warr retired to live in France but was a guest at this year's Bahrain Grand Prix.
That race saw the Lotus name return to F1, under the stewardship of Malaysian entrepreneur Tony Fernandes.
Warr raced in the Formula Junior competition in the early 1960s, winning the 1963 Japanese Grand Prix in a Lotus 23, but his career really took off when he became team manager in October 1969.
Within three years he had helped guide Emerson Fittipaldi to the world championship in only his second year driving at the top level, and four years later he was talent-spotted by the Wolf team.
They won their first race, with Jody Scheckter driving the Wolf R1, and he managed two more race wins during the season before his title challenge faltered towards the end of the campaign.
Warr continued with Wolf after they merged with the Fittipaldi team, but in 1981 he returned to Lotus, becoming team principal the following year when Chapman died.
He worked closely with the young Nigel Mansell, and when he left to join Williams in 1985, Warr signed Senna as his replacement.
Two years later Senna moved on, and Warr replaced him with reigning world champion Nelson Piquet.
