Lamborghini has the most recent involvement in F1 by any of the VW brands having been an engine supplier all the way through to 1991 I think.

And....they are ferrari's true market competitor.....what is the confusion?

VW motorsport matrix
VW- Dakar Rally
Audi- Le Mans Sportscar/ DTM/ FIA GT
Skoda- Rally
Porsche- Sportcars/ Carrera Cup/ Endurance
SEAT- WTCC
Bentley- Nill (previously LeMans)
Lamborghini- Officially nothing currently
Bugatti- Unlikely/ Not Justifiable

The average consumer would be lucky to name two of the brands under VAG, the bread and butter brands will be the ones that get the most advertising bang for the buck. I think Porsche's last year in F1 was 91 or 92 with the TAG engines.

Ah, but i would wager that this average consumer couldn't care less about F1 either...

But in terms of race bread performance, it would lack what Ferrari and Porsche have.

That isn't the point of a Lamborghini though. :)

"With LMP1, there are two classes and two brands - Audi and Porsche. We do not like to both go into LMP1 [against each other]; that is not so funny," Mueller said.

The answer may be staring us in the face.

And those who accuse Lamborghini of being an agricultural vehicle manufacturer.....just remember, of the three brands discussed here....only one makes a stupid SUV...

...the worst Porsche ever (and I mean ALL of them...not just this one)

In reality you cant expect a new team to enter F1 and dominate, for that reason there is too much downside and possible damage to the Porsche aura.

For that reason plus the possible volume of additional sales, I would expect to see VW as the front running brand.

Personally I see no "upside" for VAG in entering Formula1. Obviously F1 has a LOT more cachet than LeMans, which VAG wins year after year.
As BMW, Honda and Toyota will tell you F1 is a very specialised money pit, and I doubt there's much comfort in coming 2nd, let alone 6th or worse, which is the most likely outcome of VAG trying (with whatever of its brands) to create an F1 team from scratch.

If I were them I'd stay in the comfortable backwater they currently dominate.

I agree with most of that.

As Toyota showed...building a team from scratch absorbs SERIOUS money and often with no results. Personally, my view would be that if VAG wanted in....they would just buy or marry themselves to the best suitor.

Williams are always a possibility due to their expertise, and current plight.....but I just keep thinking that Dieter Matascitz will lose interest at some point....and that a VW F1 car with Red Bull sponsorship would be a great fit.
