Perhaps the pressure is getting to Lewis, but why make a statement like this, and in Germany, to me it just seems tasteless and disrespectful.

Lewis Hamilton has admitted it is no longer a special feeling to beat seven time Formula One World Champion Michael Schumacher.

When the 41 year old German announced his return to Formula 1 for 2010, McLaren driver Hamilton said it will be "an honour and privilege" to go wheel to wheel with one of his childhood heroes.

"He is one of the sport's greatest competitors, a legend, it will be great to compete against him," said the 2008 World Champion, whose Formula 1 career began the season after Schumacher initially retired four years ago.

"It doesn't matter whether I win or lose. The fact I will be able to drive alongside Schumacher is something I can carry all my life," added Hamilton.

But 15 races into Schumacher's difficult comeback, the 25 year old Briton admits the thrill has gone.

"In the beginning I was very excited about his comeback," Hamilton is quoted by TZ newspaper during a recent visit to Germany.

"But now it's not the same because he is mostly racing behind me. In this respect there is no value in my beating him," he revealed.

I dont see the disrespect.
What he's saying is that he doesn't find racing with Michael as exciting as he thought it would be, because they are not "directly" competing... which is pretty understandable.

No big deal. I dont think Michael would care much about it either...

Don't think its disrespect full, it's obvious and maybe a little late though.

But Shumacher isn't in the championship hunt, nor particularly fast, there isn't much value in beating him, why do you feel it is disprectful spankyham? I don't think Hamilton has alluded to Shumacher's past achievements.

*assuming the quote is accurate.

Well, I could easily understand the sentiment being accurate, but that's not the point. Why even say it? To me there's no point. MS isn't in the hunt.

I'd prefer if it wasn't accurate and he said he's being misquoted. That's only my opinion, perhaps I'm just reading too much into it.

Why even say it?

He was being interviewed by a German newspaper and I'd assume he was replying to a question about how he felt about Schumacher.

Fair enough, but, for me, a real champion, a la Stirling Moss, would have stuck with his original answer to that question, or just said he already answered that.

But his original statement about Shumacher returning (which I think your referring to) is no longer true?

a REAL champion huh? Not liking something or someone doesn't make it less real or diminish it's impact in the same way the opposite liking something or someone doesn't increase the achievement. Every WDC champion get's one portrait on the F1 website.

What ive bolded is exactly the reason he said it.... what Lewis shouldnt ahve said is the word "anymore" im sure Michael will hav a good car suited to him next year and willl give the young whippersnappers a lesson or two in agressive driving. I can see your point easily but the Lewis- disrespectful, pressure getting to him part in your OP although i can understand does seem like a cheap shot though. But i do agree Lewis should have not said that, mind you, you cant always trust reports of any kind, hes probably been misquoted.

The word anymore only appears in the headline, and it's not in quotes. The word anymore does not appear in the quoted portion at the end. So the title of this thread is not an accurate when compared to the link.

What Lewis said could be summarised to "I got overexcited for nothing". Which is the truth for everyone who looked forward to Michael's comeback, so this thread was another stealthy attempt to bash Lewis though it seems to have failed. Glad to see objective Ferrari fans not biting the bait.
