Well with the newly formed Mercedes GP team wouldn't Mercedes have reason to let McLaren out of the contract?

That assumes McLaren want out of it. They don't particularly, not at the moment anyway, because the Merc is probably the best engine in F1. But like bud says, McLaren are likely to become a bespoke works outfit in the new engine era, what with the McLaren Automotive cars running McLaren (badged) engines. Essentially, they'll be a British Ferrari, except independent.

It will be nice when McLaren produces it's own power plants.
They know how to build engines.
I'm not found of 4 cylinder motors for F1 racing as F1 should be about the "baddest" technology available at any time.
A turbo V 6 would be interesting but a turbo V8 or V10 would be better.
F1 should have more HP than any other form of motor racing with the exception of Top fuel drag cars.

Before Merc, BMW used to own the field...remember Montoya-Williams times?

The plan definitely is for McLaren to start producing their own, though I like the ring of McLaren-BMW.

I like the ring of MaLaren Porsche better.

I agree with Bud, pointless for McLaren to retain their Mercedes relationship if the new engine reqs kick in 2013.

I assure you, the F1-spec Turbocharged 4 Cylinder engines would indeed be the "baddest" engines available. These things are not going to be slouches.

Porsche made the TAG motors for them in the 80's didn't they?

Having Porsche provide engines would be good but, having them run a car would be really good.
Now only if an American car maker would jump in with both feet, say Cadillac / GM would be nice.

Ford would have the most to gain of the American manufacturers.

Yeah i would prefer Ford over any other American brand.

They are just so...bad bottom?

I dont like GM, too in your face.

I mean do you want the guys who created the Escalade to be making an F1 car?

If an engine is German, then it is most likely to be the best performing engine on the grid. It will be intresting to see if there are any engine supplier changes next year and when the new regulations come in.

Aren't Mercedes F1 engines made in Britain by the company that used to be Ilmor?
