HEALTH WARNING: This may upset some readers.
These are the words of Mark Hughes-repected motorsport writer who writes for autosport, not mine.
For the record I believe Lewis made an error in going for the gap, but thats easy to say in retrospect.
Ok are you ready, deap breath..........

Hughes analyses the 5 title contenders and gives the strengths of each, he is fair and complementary to them all. On Alonso, one of the strengths he gives is 'raw on- track cunning', and he says...

"watch lap one at monza between the first two chicanes and see if you can detect him lifting slightly as he sees in his mirrors Massa with his hands full of Hamilton, almost as if he's trying to induce them to clash by backing massa towards the McLaren-"

:yikes::yikes::eek::eek: UN - BE - LEI -VA -BLE. Ive not looked I darent. I dont want to throw something heavy at my TV. If anyone looks tell me what you see.

I don't know about this particular incident but IMO it'd be a bit naive to think drivers don't think about and carry out such actions, not necessarily to cause a collision but to get others to get in the way of each other or just cause some distraction. That's part of racing.

Absolutely!
I'm sure everybody does it, and quite often as well.

I think the key is the word almost, it just seems like he's trying to get an example of Alonso's on track cunning.

Alonso diddn't cause the crash anyway, even if he did lift off, Hamilton for whatever reason got in the racing line of the car in front (Massa) who had pretty clear track position. Some drivers would've left Hamilton room, but Massa has been pretty determined since Germany, he was taking that space.

Simply a racing incident and nothing more, Lewis found himself in a place that was not cohesive for a pass. Why is this incident worthy of rehashing with a new thread??

New evidence
ps I agree about wrong place wrong time. I said it in the opening post.
A point worthy of discussion though i think.

Not sure I would call a British magazine writer's opinion 'New Evidence', but certainly this is a discussion board, so discussing anything at all is relevant.

My take on the incident is that Hamilton crashed into the back of Massa because he was overly aggressive, wasn't paying attention, was checking his look in the mirror and texting his girlfriend when he should have been watching his clearance. It ended his race, tightened up the championship and gave me a good grin on lap one...a pretty good turnout all things considered.

So, one opinion is that Alonso caused the accident from two cars ahead by paying attention in his mirrors while managing the work load of getting an F1 car through a chicane in the first lap....thereby making Alonso the genius driver of all F1 drivers. Or...there is another possibility... that Hamilton made a cok of it.

Meh...could go either way I guess.

I don't remember anyone going into the back of Massa, perhaps you're confusing him with Button.
