Okay, so what would have to be done to bring Williams back to their glory days of winning races and world championships? Who would be their drivers, designers, etc? What engine would you put in the car to make it work and in what time frame would all this be achieved?

I would love to see the Frank and Patrick get some more glory days probably before they have to hand over the reins fulltime to someone else.

I would keep the same drivers for the next two years and let Hulkenberg get more speed/mileage/confidence/tutoring under Rubens, hopefully during which they've won at least 4 races within that 2 years (1 next year and 3 in the following). Then make a full on championship attack, Hulko clearly as the number one with Rubinho as number 2 (I hope Rubens isn't reading this haha)......but with what engines???? I saw Williams were supporting Ferrari in the team orders scandal but I don't think that will happen, I don't think that even if VW come in they will be straight on the winning pace within 2 years, so perhaps Williams will do it with.......???? Heck I don't know, any thoughts anyone? Maybe Honda will make a come back into the new turbo era? Williams Honda, hmmmm somehow that sounds like it could be a winning combination hahaha

I feel your pain man. I can't believe Williams haven't won since Brazil 2004. I support them as a second team because I seem to get more pleasantly suprised when Williams do well as to when McLaren do well because we are used to McLaren in this day and age fighting for championships. I would definatley like to see Frank and Patrick get atleast a win before they both leave for good.

They can only do well with a factory engine deal. And that's not likely with all the carmakers either running their own teams or freshly out of the sport.

The improvements to the Cosworth engine aswell as the chassis this year aswell as still seeing Sir Frank at the races is a true joy for us supporters :)

Williams are really doing a brilliant job with what they have. No doubt about it.

They have the skills to run a winning team right there.

What they need first and foremost is a decent budget to compete with the top teams. If they get that, everything else will fall into place.

IMO, to get a decent budget they need top line sponsorship. Sponsors want to see huge public following. To achieve that, they need to differentiate themselves to become a more attractive proposition than the other teams to their target audience. If I were them, I would look at marketing the "All New Williams" as the only truly British team. As it stands now, there is no completely British team, so, Williams could look to take that spot and garner a lot of public support and sponsorship that way.

The barrier, of course, is the engine. Cosworth being an Australian/American owned company. There would be two options, develop their own engine - more expensive but not impossible OR buyout Cosworth. A buyout could be achieved either directly or indirectly.

To be able to claim the mantle of the first and only truly British team in yonks would be a real coup and, if the Brits got behind them, we could easily see Williams back to their glory days of winning races and challenging for championships.

McLaren was originally founded by a Kiwi but, apart from the engine, isn't McLaren now a British team?

I suppose you could also say that apart from the Italian engine, Swiss owner and German chassis the Sauber could be Japanese.

I was just thinking that it could be a "niche" position that Williams could try and exploit. Just a thought. I would love to see Williams back with a "barmy army" type following and winning races.

Williams back in their hayday had Honda engines etc etc yet they will always be British simply for the fact that the founder is British and at heart McLaren will always be an Aussie team. :drink:

Err, Kiwi team I think you mean, Bruce McLaren, founder of McLaren, was a New Zealander (Kiwi).

No doubt the Brits should and will be proud of Williams, McLaren etc as British teams, my point was there is a niche/gap now where, of all the British teams they don't have, what you might call, a complete British team. McLaren depend on German engines etc. I was just postulating that if Williams could fill that vacancy, perhaps it would give them an edge that, well marketed, could bring additional following and, a much increased budget.

As it stands now we have an Italian car powered by an Italian engine, a German car powered by a German engine, a French car powered by a French engine and, it would be great to see, and great for F1, to have a British car powered by a British engine.

Yah sorry I meant Kiwi but frankly and strictly imho any true F1 fan cares more about either a team or driver more than any other reason. I've only been following F1 since about '79 and nationality has never been a huge or deciding factor in whom I have supported.

Hm, maybe Williams should talk to Rolls-Royce plc - only problem could be the size of those engines :P
And I'm not talking about the BMW-owned Rolls-Royce...

i recieved my latest copy of f1 racing magazine and there was an article about bringing williams to their glory days, and they seem confident that will everything in place for the future, that they can be force in formula1 again.....
#216493
I would imagine that Williams will do well in the next few years because they have been working on the sort of budget that the restrictions are levelled at so it will hurt Ferrari/Mclaren/Red Bull the most.

I hope so as it would be immense imho :) .
