Mika suffered more reliability problems and won the WDC.

MIchael suffered more reliability problems and lost the WDC to Alonso.

Pretty clear cut.

Definitely Hakkinen in 1998. Alonso was amazing in both years he won the WDC, however he did so already well into the era of reliability we currently have. It should be pointed out that traction control and aerodynamics in F1 were pretty much at their peak by 2006 and the F1 cars between circa 2004-2008 were pretty much glued to the road...

In 1998 whilst there was the double braking system initially, that was quickly banned, there was no traction control and it was the first season with a major change in tyre regulations (introduction of grooved tyres), and reliability was nowhere near as good as it was by 2006.

All of that said, personally I think it has to go to Mika.

Again it hard to directly compare the two drivers; eight years is a lifetime in F1, massively different cars, more/less championship rivals! I think that Hakkinen had the tougher job to claim his two world titles fighting against an in-form Schumacher and not having as many gadgets to control just about every aspect of Alonso's car in 2006, I still maintain that during the 2005/2006 seasons, the car almost drove itself! I'll probably always pick a 90s champion over 00s champions because back in the 90s the driver had to "drive" the car and not rely as much on a electronics to control things like traction control, launch control, auto gearboxes etc.

All polls including Alonso on this board is useless, due to the strong English presence. Its like giving a afro American man his day in the Mississippi court in the 60's....
No offense thou, its just a fact that "most" English f1 fans dont like him after 2007.

There's quite a large presence of Americans, Australians and other nationalities here on this forum, I believe Alonso is disliked because of his behaviour at McLaren and the general fact where's there's scandal; Alonso isn't far away! Trying to blackmail his team boss, Ron Dennis is the reason I dislike him as a person, no one can say he's not a good driver but his general conduct is poor, of all the scandals he has been around, I find it amazing that he is innocent of everything, where there is smoke there is fire!

I actually have a sneaking suspicion that he does some waxing to those eyebrows of his. If your wife doesn't already watch the races, this could be a good lead in to get her watching. As in "Babe, I need your opinion on something...."

Alonso might not be back on the podium for ages, by then she'll be hooked!

You're welcome :wavey:

Okay, there are people from many other countries. But I ask you this, all the bad stuff you have read about Alonso, which country is most of the stories from? If I were a betting man, I would say 90% of the crap written after 2007 is from the English media. Surely he cant been that bad when Martin Whitmarsh was quoted for saying he regret that they did not do more to keep him at McLaren. That blackmailing stuff is something you have picked up by the media. Any other scandals you want to say he has been involved in, maybe something else you have picked up from the media?

But Ill admit, Im sure he wants to be the no 1 driver in any team he goes to. And deservely he should, two times world champion and arguably the best driver out there. Same as Schumi was in his time around. LH has been the no 1 driver for the last two years, and we will see how they handle it in the last 5 races.

And who cares how the drivers are as persons. We are all fans of either drivers or/and teams, and I personally really dont care if they are satans son or church going boys. If they deliver on the track and gives us great racing im more than happy with that. But as my point to this, all the media has been running so much stories about all the s*** he has done. Im sure allot of this total bull... As for Ron Dennis, well he had to step down after another scandal, so he might not be the person to believe the most. :-)

Due to all this, Alonso is going to lose most of the polls on these boards.

I'm not going to debate spygate here in this thread; it's been debated to death on this forum when it happened! But 90% of the crap; ask yourself this; how much of the speculation is true? Not everything in the media is made up; there are reputable news agencies out there that report the news as it is!!! There were two massive scandals in the 2007/08 seasons and Alonso was involved in both. My personal opinion is that Alonso is not above cheating to get what he wants!

I'm going to leave it there; let's get back to the poll! Hakkinen '98 or Alonso '06?

We can say allot about this, but lets just leave it with that he was cleared of all charges and Im sure they would have smacked his hands if they could. :-)

That is a REALLY tough call. Anyone who says Schumacher wasn't still on top form in '06 is nuts! I think Alonso probably just edges it cause the '98 McLaren was much quicker than anything else, and in 2006 the Ferrari was definitely the quicker car in the second half of the season. I'll never forget watching the last laps at Turkey, proper edge of your seat stuff!
