^^^

I have said something like that in some other thread. To me, the main problem in F1 and overtaking is that the cars are waaay too fragile. There seems to be at least some bits of wing or a puncture in almost every o/t attempt. Its annoying and really, why dont they reduce that darn front wing??!! :irked:

As far as o/t duels, problem is.... as above, most of them end up with pieces flying.
but a real, clean overtake.... the pass on Kubica at silverstone was very close to a great one, but Alonso was much faster and went to the grass anyway, so not much there. But almost.

The Shucmacher and Lewis duel was very nice. Macca was much faster, but Lewis was really good at working for the pass, while Michael gave him hell. Altough it was more name vs name than real action, it was exciting to see.

Maybe the Mclaren assault on Alonso at Canada... and in the end, the passes themselves were only 'safe' enough to attempt with the help of a stubborn backmarker and the Fduct. Which, since everyone has 'em now, that's it for that....

The Schumacher and Rosberg little battle in Spa was nice as well... but as always, it ended with bits and pieces.

Even in Valencia when Lewis had a front wing problem, Alonso found better he'd rather keep distance and wait til Lewis pitted as he was instructed to, despite being faster... goes to show how much risk there's into each o/t maneouvre.

Massa showed in Spa (twice already!) it pays better to stay out of the action.

I really hope to see Lewis vs Alonso in wet, then their cars are pretty much equal and driver's skill becomes an essential part of racing. I rank them two as the best drivers in the league and it would be great for spectators, for the title and for Formula 1.

Overtaking Working Group decided to fit the 2009-spec cars a wider front wing, thinking it would be more tolerant of turbulence while in the draft which, in turn, would improve overtaking. Except that the new wing is almost the same width as the full width of the front of the car, measured to the outer sidewall of the tyres. And the carbon-fibre weave used in them is not very tolerant of contact.

I thought the new too-wide front wing would be more disastrous than it has been. For one thing, it did not bode well that three cars had to have their front wings replaced before completing a single lap at the inaugural 2009 grand prix. It was enough a problem throughout 2009 that I thought they would scrap the uber-wide wing for 2010. I reckon that would have been too costly a revamp (to both the FIA and to the FOTA) so, a year and half later, they still are living with the OWG's mistake. But the drivers have adjusted to their wingtips' perilous location simply by giving the other cars a wider berth, particularly at the front.

The net result is that if the new wing makes the overtaking easier, you'll never see it because the drivers have had to grow too protective of their noses. The reason for the whole "team orders" fracas at Hungary was not that Alonso wasn't capable of overtaking Massa, it was that Alonso saw the insanity of risking his front wing by dicing for the lead with a slower teammate. Especially at the TilkeDromes, the only overtaking manoeuvre with a reasonable risk is outbraking the car you are pursuing (once you edge ahead, your nose is "safe") or simply waiting for him to make a mistake.

That, IMHO, is why there have been so few driving duels in 2010. Unless they are markedly faster, or their opponent puts a wheel wrong, most drivers will content themselves with coming a certain second rather than throwing the dice and risking losing a dozen slots over the difference.

Absolute nonsense. I heard a lot of the same in early 2009 and nothing ever came of it. In fact, overtaking has demonstrably improved these last two years.

There still doesn't seem to be enough overtaking, and maybe team orders are also impacting rivalries. Possibly because there's four or so drivers all close together a one-on-one battle hasn't really materialised...?

The most interesting battle this year is Alonso Vs. Stewards, LOL

Alonso 1, Stewards nil form the looks of it. Alonso V the safety car, now thats a whitewash.

Not really, Alonso vs. Stewards:
Alonso 0-1 The jump start
Alonso 1-1 The pass in monaco
Alonso 1-2 The safety car
Alonso 1-3 The overtake on Kubica
Alonso 1-4 The team order fine
(the stewards had nothing to do with the WMSC hearing)

Now that's a beating. hehe

True, although we probably could have Alonso v (random person involved in f1) it's been that kinda season.
