All drivers at this level have total belief in themselves and inflated egos, they need that to be where they are.

Very good. I agree, and i dont even think its bad to have a good opinion about yourself.

The problems come when you actually do say it... for some reason its viewed badly when Alonso "thinks" he is better than the rest... but its ok to say how good you are, or how good you drove.

I dont think i have ever heard Alonso saying "I drove the socks off that car"...

At least he doesnt say that every race is "my best ever" or that he "drove my heart out" .

But...but...he has been that much faster than his team mate all year long....right? The team mate that almost beat Hammy for the title? So Alonso pretty much stated the obvious.

I'll go further: was the 08 Mclaren the best in the field? because the 07 was.
how about the F10... where was it on day 1, where is it now? where was it in 2009 and where did it end?

Even then... was it him saying "we are bringing 6 tenths" extra? or was it some conversation to a specific car at a specific track or situation. This doesnt even mean he's saying he's better than anyone. in fact, was it Alonso that said this or his manager? because i have never heard this or read this as a quote...

He hasnt led the champioship, his team mate has. But I'll give you that he has generlly been quicker than his team mate....with a little help

As to Hamilton saying it, then claiming he didn't...that is exactly what happened with the stewards isn't it? He told them a story which was absolutely false. Then they played him the audio tape of his own voice over the radio proving he was lying...and he still denied it. Then they set another meeting in the future so he could collect himself and get some advice from McLaren's council....and then he admitted that the team made him do it. He would never say he is better than anyone else? What about the 'monkeys at the back' speech of his? Oh, I'm quite certain he denied everything on his personal website....not that his denial means anything at all. That much has been proven without question.
